Fresh from her shower, Anise was in her pajamas. She put on her robe and tied it shut, slipped on her slippers and went upstairs. Not seeing Angus, she looked outside and saw him with Marcus. She had a question, and she believed that she could read him, seer to seer, probably more accurately than she could read Ruby. If she didn't get the answer she wanted, though, she'd try Ruby. And, in all fairness, she believed Ruby would be far more traditional than Angus would
She went outside, and as she approached Angus and Marcus, Marcus looked at Angus, looked behind him and nodded, cueing Angus that someone was approaching. Angus turned around and saw Anise coming out.
"I am so sorry we spoiled your day," Angus said to her, wrapping her in a hug. "I wanted this to be so good for you...."
"Me? We are the ones that owe you an apology," she frowned. "This was your wedding day. And I'm sure that there is, somehow, a story behind it. However, we buggared this up royally. And the fact is that we need to be pulling our own weight. Ginger and I and Victor and Sam want to get a place and share expenses. We thought maybe there's an apartment here we could make work. Or maybe rent the poolhouse in Tuscany so Ginger and I could finish school. Sam and Victor could maybe get jobs in the village or something..."
"No, no, no," Angus shook his head. "You four are not a problem...."
"Then what the heck happened? We don't understand..." she began. Angus sighed heavily, at a real loss for words. He did not want to ruin their relationship with Edward or with Ruby either one but clearly they both had worked together to set him up for this. And someone had to explain it to the kids in a way that made sense. Angus wasn't sure he had any sort of words that would make what happened today okay.
"Anise," Marcus said, "it's so complicated, but let me see if I can help. It isn't about whether Ruby and Angus love each other. You already know where that stands. However, because of the money found in the cabin, and Diamond's custody situation needing finalized, and also the Donohue family assets needing to be firmed up. Things were getting hugely complex. The way it stands is that if anything happens to Edward, Angus inherits it all. And, if something happens to Angus, then not only does Ruby have a much bigger role, but, very likely Evan will too. And, if that were to ever happen, Ruby needs to have dual citizenship with not only England but Italy as well. And because she doesn't have any Italian blood, the only way for her to get Italian citizenship is for her to get married. Because of how goofy Suzanne is getting, that needed to be done sooner rather than later. So, when it came up in a meeting today with Robert and Edward, Ruby and Angus got married in order to solve a number of legal issues. It was far more impulsive than planned, I promise."
Anise studied Marcus's face for a moment. Her own seers' powers told her there was some truth in it but it was not exactly as Marcus had put it forward. She looked at Angus. She still didn't believe he had had an active part in it.
"Is that the line you're sticking to, too?" she asked Angus pointedly.
"For tonight. I'm honestly very tired tonight," he told her. That, she saw, had the ring of truth to it.
"As for moving out, you and Ginger are not legal age. I cannot let you do that. As I said, you're not the problem. It's just been one really bolloxed up day. That's all it is. and we all have that periodically. You four don't realize just how big of a help you are." He hugged her again and kissed her forehead. "I want you here because this is your home. It'll look better in the morning. I promise."
"I don't believe you," she said. "Your energy doesn't believe that, and neither do I, but I do see that you're tired. So I'll let you off the hook for tonight. I won't do it forever, though. Just so you know."
"Understood," Angus said. "Now go get some sleep. You're leaving extra early in the morning with Evan, remember?"
"Yeah. We remember. Goodnight," she said. She turned and went back inside, shutting the door. Then she sighed. She didn't believe him. Sooner or later, she believed, he would figure out that trying to lie to a seer was stupid.
