What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting.     “It is said that a laurel wand cannot perform a dishonourable act, although in the quest for glory (a not uncommon goal for those best suited to these wands), I have known laurel wands perform powerful and sometimes lethal magic. Laurel wands are sometimes called fickle, but this is unfair. The laurel wand seems unable to tolerate laziness in a possessor, and it is in such conditions that it is most easily and willingly won away. Otherwise, it will cleave happily to its first match forever, and indeed has the unusual and engaging attribute of issuing a spontaneous lightning strike if another witch or wizard attempts to steal it.

    “Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.
    Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.”

    GENERAL APPEARANCE: Gavin is a classically attractive man. He is tall and has dirty blonde hair that’s tone changes with the seasons. He is strongly built due to his love of sports and the outdoors, keeping him active and fit. Gavin’s muscles are quite average among his friends – definitely there but not in bodybuilder proportions. He is not self-conscious or vain about his appearance and is quite comfortable in his own skin. Gavin has no tattoos or noticeable scars (only small ones from childhood accidents).
    Gavin’s style is simple. He mostly wears jeans and cotton tees or flannel. He dresses to feel comfortable and be practical, especially since his job requires some running around. Gavin owns a couple suits and various other formal wear but only wears them when it is necessary. In the winter he frequently wears heavy cloaks for warmth over his normal clothes. Gavin’s philosophy is function over fashion.

    PERSONALITY: A young Gavin Blackmoor could be most accurately compared to the James Potter that Snape knew at Hogwarts. He was arrogant, self-obsessed, and in constant awe of his own abilities. He was athletic and competitive, especially when it came to sports like Quidditch. But regardless of his unintentionally poor treatment of his classmates Gavin never lacked the Gryffindor heart. He has always been brave on heroic levels and held himself up to high moral standards. To this day Gavin blatantly refuses to use any sort of dark or damaging magic.  

    After graduation, Gavin’s ego lessoned considerably. He embraced his job at the Ministry and learned to live under authority. Gavin’s natural loyalty is an asset to have at the Ministry and once someone takes a leap of faith to trust him, he is extremely responsible. The only problems occur when people underestimate or are suspicious of him. Gavin has a tendency to mirror other people’s opinions of him – he will make the effort for someone who wishes to be his friend, but will have little patience for anyone who doesn’t care for him.

    Gavin can be quite passionate when his interest is spiked. When he gets involved in a hobby, cause, or person he has a hard time disconnecting from it. Gavin is unafraid of adventure and trying new things. He’s optimistic that things will turn out in his favor, but is not completely naive about the bad things in the world. He truly believes that good will win and his view of the world is sometimes worryingly black and white. Gavin has very little acceptance for those that succumb to the dark arts and sees it as taking the easy way out.

    For a Gryffindor, Gavin has to fight back against his own cowardness quite often. He has a strong fear of both heights and small spaces, both of which he purposely exposes himself to in the hopes of overcoming. More than anything, Gavin is terrified that he is a coward and unworthy to wear the red and gold. Ironically, Gavin’s fear of his own fear grows as he attempts to become fearless.

CHARACTER HISTORY

    Early Years: Gavin was born to Juliet and David Blackmoor on December 12th. The family took their new baby home to a suburban muggle neighborhood. Here, they were surrounded by other similar families with children of their own. Every bush was perfectly pruned and the cars always sparkled. Upon the urging of David, Juliet weaned herself off of using magic in order to fit more perfectly into their little community.

    Gavin grew up in a supportive household. Years of teaching at the primary school lever had trained his mother to be patient and kind with her son as he explored the world around him. His cop father taught him respect, justice, and right from wrong. The only stain on their seemingly perfect life was the underlying presence of magic from his witch mother. The only signs of her former life were found in the simple cleaning and cooking spells she performed in secret. Gavin remained unaware of these actions but David became increasingly uncomfortable and suspicious of anything odd around the house.

    When the time came, Gavin entered preschool and then muggle primary school. At this point he only knew of a muggle life and therefore fit in perfectly with the other children. Gavin was a social boy and loved the company that school offered even if he didn’t care for all of the academics. Around age seven, Gavin started to show strong signs of magic on the playground and in the classroom. Juliet was secretly thrilled but his very muggle father was less so.

    By the time Gavin received his Hogwarts letter there was some controversy within the family over his future. Eventually (with input from Gavin himself) the decision was made to enroll him in Hogwarts school rather than continue on with a more traditional muggle education.

    Hogwarts Years: Gavin was endlessly pleased with being sorted into Gryffindor house. Where his mother had been a Hufflepuff, the young boy didn’t desire to follow in her footsteps. Gavin’s personality more closely resembled his father’s in regards to his selfless bravery and strong vision of right and wrong. He fit right in with the other new Gryffindors and most of them bonded together. Many of these first years became incredibly excited about the flying lessons that were offered. Gavin was less enthusiastic. For as long as he could remember he had been terrified of heights but during class the longer he stayed on the ground the more he hated himself.

    It was at this point, only a few weeks into his Hogwarts life that Gavin became obsessed with being a true and worthy Gryffindor. He was embarrassed about his natural fears and overcompensated for them by becoming increasingly daring and adventurous to prove his worth.
    Academically, Gavin was not the strongest. He was an easily distracted boy and flat out ignored any curfews the school had. He was constantly talking to new students, discovering new places, and trying to find new ways to entertain himself. This took a toll on his grades and most of his teachers didn’t care for him. By the time O.W.L. year came around Gavin was still unfocused on his studies. His results came in as follows.

    The guidance counselor explained that if he wished to pursue a career in magical law enforcement he would need to do better. This forced him to study and work harder. Once Gavin applied himself he was actually quite an intelligent young man and was able to earn all E’s or higher on his N.E.W.T.s.

    Beyond academics, Gavin was highly involved in the Quidditch team. Originally he tried out for seeker but was beaten by Audriana Swan and instead filled the position of chaser. This sparked a healthy rivalry between the two for many years as they bickered it out on the field and within the team. Regardless of his apparent dislike for the brunette, Gavin had quite the secret soft spot for her and he wrestled with an internal love-hate for her. In sixth year Gavin ‘won’ their little battle by become team captain and leading the Gryffindors to victory.

    Gavin left Hogwarts with a less-than-perfect disciplinary record but with love in his heart and passion in his life.

    Adulthood: After Hogwarts Gavin went on to University for a degree in Magical Law Enforcement. While he dreamed of joining the Ministry he worried that his in-school grades and record were not good enough to get him a job right out of school. While there he met Avery Bishop and the two became close friends. Gavin had been an only child growing up but he saw the blonde as the sister he had never had and for some unknown reason she brought out the protective side in him with full-force.

    Gavin graduated University with much better grades than Hogwarts and applied for a job in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement which he received. While he had not become the Auror that he had dreamed of as a first-year, he found that he enjoyed this position better and was able to help people rather than being on a constant wild goose chase.

    Gavin currently lives in a cottage in the Cotswolds which he inherited from his grandfather when he passed away.
