What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. The White Flag of a Saturday Night

It was that Saturday, Avery realized when she woke up. That wasn't to say that she hadn't been thinking about it every day since Jack's letter. Though it did raise the small, careful question about Teddy's schedule. He wasn't free until a Tuesday in February, but he could meet them on a weekend straight away? She didn't know what that meant. And she probably shouldn't have even noticed it, but of course she did. She wouldn't be Avery Bishop if she hadn't.

But, obviously, that would never be mentioned if she could help it.

She went to her office first, looking for the file of everything she knew about Fergus from the time Robin basically adopted him. It struck her far, far too late that this was Jack Dyllan. Of Robin's quidditch team. The one she'd seen when attending games and acting like she loved the sport more than she really had. Not that she didn't love watching him and his friends compete. But it had never caught her attention until there was Robin.

Now, she had a chance to take care of another thing that he'd loved, besides Sophie. So it was down to Fergus's pen that she went, still bemused that the Ministry even had room for these things. Perhaps in the rebuild they'd done after that attack, they had decided to make room for more creatures. Avery, unsurprisingly, had not been paying much attention at that point.

Frankly, she wasn't even convinced that she was qualified for this job anymore. How had she gotten worse at this over the years? Goodness.

Taking the lift despite her distaste for it, Avery stepped out and made her way down to the door that would lead them to him. Somehow, she didn't think that checking in on him before Jack and Teddy showed up would help anything, so she just began vaguely flipping through the pages in his file and attempting to look halfway busy rather than incredibly anxious. And impatient. There was also that. Her eyes scanned the pages, but she was paying more attention to what she could see out of the corner of her eye - in other words, the end of the hallway - than she would ever admit to.

She was looking forward to seeing him, obviously, but none of this was normal. So what now?

Yours

Teddy,

It didn't beat me home, but I do think she's feeling better. Perhaps it's just that she's in her pajamas and is off to bed, now. That, of course, is why it took me a while to get back to you. Ironically, I feel a bit bad for writing so belatedly.

I can't say I'm surprised about school, since the term is starting up again soon. But February works fine for me. I actually haven't got any plans for that night, yet, so it's definitely doable. And, knowing Keiran, he won't try and convince me to go round to his on a Tuesday. Much too responsible. But as far as being in the castle goes, the odds really are quite high. Keiran is Sophie's godfather, so he sees me perhaps more than he would truly like to! For her sake, of course.

I don't know much about grading, but I would be happy to help. With everything I'm trying to do at work, though, Merlin knows how much time I'll have, myself. But if that friend of yours has time, I'd really like to talk to them.

I'll go ahead and block that evening out, and perhaps once we get closer we can decide what we want to do?

Looking forward to it already,
Avery

P.S. Your friend James doesn't know what he's talking about.

O-Okay

"I'm sorry?"

Keiran stared at the blonde as she pulled her red jacket on, and could think of little else to say as he handed Sophia the color she wanted. He had bought her a coloring book full of magical creatures like the dragons Avery worked to protect, and she seemed perfectly content to spend the day on it. The thing was, he had only just found out the real reason why the smaller blonde was staying with him that afternoon.

"Your floo, Keiran. I need to use it. I can't apparate out like you can, and I refuse to be late. So, please."

"But-- you're meeting.. Teddy?"

Avery turned to him, exasperated now, her head tilted back until she could level him with a disapproving expression. Sophia glanced up at Keiran as if to inform him that he was really in trouble now. He looked between the pair of them, mainly just confused.

"What?" She snapped, staring down at him in his spot on the couch. "I'm not allowed to be friends with him because he works for you? I offered to talk to him about his family. The same as talking to you about Dad. Or about Mathias. Don't go mad over this."

"Avery," Keiran cut in, his voice low and serious - almost a warning. "Avery, I'm not blind. I may not know him, but I know you. And something happened yesterday."

"You're wrong. Nothing happened. Now help me out and let me leave."

So she appeared in The Leaky, frustrated but determined to shake off Keiran's prodding. The problem wasn't that he was wrong, actually. In fact, it was that Teddy said yes when she was mental enough to ask so bluntly, but he thought they were going to talk about serious topics that Avery avoided so strictly. She just had to remind herself to keep the focus on him, rather than her. It was incredibly easy for a woman like Avery to fall back into personal stories that she thought would make the other person feel better. It wouldn't help, and it would just make the other person feel bad for her. She knew as much from experience, clearly. That wasn't her goal.

She just wanted... Well, she wanted to help, and she wanted him to like her. She didn't have nearly as many people to spend time with as she used to, and she-- she liked him, she thought. It was rather hard to tell. How well could she like someone who she'd nearly killed and who always seemed embarrassed by her when anybody else showed up?

The coffee shop was public, though Muggle-owned. It was a start, perhaps.

Leaving the Leaky, Avery stepped into Muggle London and took a left. Her hands dipped into the leather jacket that Robin had bought her for Christmas that awful year, hoping it would give her some level of confidence that she'd had upon meeting the Ivanov. Not that she needed it, though, right?

Then again, those last moments had been something else entirely. Avery had no inkling about what had actually happened, and would never be able to ask him his opinion on it.

She did know one thing, though: Her stomach had turned over in the moment, and every time she thought about it, the same thing happened again. Oh, Merlin.

Pushing that aside, she hurried into the shop, placing an order before looking around for a table and to see if he had arrived. With the pair of them, awkwardness was a certainty. There was no need to wait and let him wonder in any way whether or not he was expected to buy her a coffee, even if she was sort of supposed to be helping him. Besides, she wouldn't have really wanted him to either way. Safer all around, then, to skip the uncomfortable glances and shuffling.

Thus, she stood off to the side, waiting for her drink to be made and passed over the counter. Being early seemed to have its privileges, as she was given a moment to calm her temper and really look around, both for a table and for the glasses that never seemed to stay where they ought to.

The Fire Blazes, Burning Bright

"Some other time, I'd love to take you up on the offer."

"...That would be wonderful."

"Come on, then, Avery. Teddy, I'll see you in a few days."

October had passed, and as the winter months crept ever closer, Keiran was finally starting to feel the people around him move away from the terror of the summer and into the wonder that Christmas could bring. With that in mind, he paused on his way out of the Great Hall after breakfast one day, turning around to look at the students, staff and - importantly - the room itself. Not particularly festive, he'd admit.

After a meeting about the winter holidays in the staff lounge, Keiran approached Teddy, one of the professors he had been making an effort to know better, along with people like Maddie and Selwyn (if the latter was feeling open that day during meals, of course). He wasn't at all sure that he had been succeeding, however, and that led to his question for Lupin:

Would he help with the Christmas decorations, because Keiran just didn't know what to do? He would, brilliant, let's sort it out this weekend while the majority of the students are out at Hogsmeade. Someone else can chaperone this time, it'll be grand. And, oh, wasn't it great that Keiran knew so much about Transfiguration because that meant that they didn't have to go out and find decorations when a flick of the wand could flurry them up as needed? It was, indeed.

And so that was what led to his teasing letter to Avery, saying how he would inevitably do a rather poor job of it and how she would probably make him look the fool if she showed up and did it. Not that Avery often tried to decorate or took much care outside of her own and of Sophie's appearance. Charming little thing that she was, of course, Sophia already wanted to dress up like a princess even though she was only a little over two years old and the dresses looked hilariously oversized on her. But the point was that Avery knew a thing or two about matching colors together, and her Christmas decorations at Bridget's house were bizarrely thoughtful for just a few strings of lights and some tinsel.

He had no idea that she would take it so literally. After all, if he had, perhaps he wouldn't have stepped out when Theodore needed to talk, telling Teddy he would be back later and very apologetically left him on his own. It was sort of spoiling his whole "let's get to know Lupin" plan, and he told Theo as much once he got there, seriously intending to hurry as best as he could.

Avery, it's important to note, had never once stepped foot in the Great Hall before. But Keiran hadn't been in his office like she'd expected, and after asking for a bit of help she found her way there thanks to a young man in a blue-and-bronze striped scarf. Walking up to the doors and peeking in, she had to reign back the shock that bloomed on her face. Merlin, but the place was positively massive. How many students was Keiran in charge of, anyway? Suddenly, his achievement was immensely more impressive. Sure, she would be proud of him no matter how many students or how many obstacles he had to overcome. But this? Wow.

So it was with an awed expression that she stood outside, divesting herself of her heavy winter coat - which had been brought in case Keiran wanted to touch up the outside as well. Of course, she felt foolish, now, for not registering just how massive the place really was. Like he would bother with much beyond the front door! Some part of her must have suspected that he wouldn't think about the outdoors, because she was standing there in a dress and black tights, and even had on shoes with heels. A teasing smile, pointed in at herself, tugged at Avery's lips as the scarf, too, came off and both garments were slung over her arm. Perhaps she could set them on a table. Gryffindor, maybe? She imagined herself as much more of a Hufflepuff, if she really thought about it, but didn't feel strongly enough to move her things. Instead, she dropped her scarf and cloak into her left hand and lifted her toes so she could sway back and forth on her heels and take the place in. Could she go inside?

And that, helpfully, was when she realized she wasn't alone. Someone was up on a ladder within the Great Hall. And, whoops. It wasn't Keiran who she was now looking massively naive in front of. Well, if he was even paying attention, which she was quite sure he wasn't. Still. After failing to find a good enough excuse to get in touch with Teddy since seeing him two months earlier, she felt guilty.

One of her arms wrapped across her back to reach for the opposite elbow in an attempt to keep her fingers from fidgeting. Then her right foot tucked itself behind her left ankle as she looked up at him, swaying a bit as she threw off her balance.

"Hello, Teddy," she called, stepping into the doorway and blinking a little when the lighting changed, dimmer in the entryway than in the hall, somehow. "I-" should have written you. I wanted to. But I was... nervous, I guess? Why? "-came by to help Keiran decorate. Is he...?"

She didn't trail off for lack of an idea of what to say. No. Her gaze had drifted upwards, past the ladder he balanced on, and up, up to the ceiling that was - bizarrely, knowing Avery's life - the most magical thing she had ever seen. Her expression froze, lips parted and eyebrows lifted, and she couldn't help herself. She walked in without the permission she believed she needed, and draped her things over the end of a table. It was, in fact, the Hufflepuff table, though she didn't know it. She didn't notice when her arm fell back to her side to match the other one. She didn't see whether or not Teddy was pleased to see her, or if he thought she looked ridiculous for acting like a first year without meaning to.

She also didn't catch the movement of one poltergeist as he flew in. Not that she would have recognized him for what he was either way.

Too good for your own good

Teddy wasn't exactly sure how he could explain this.

So, during his time working at Mungo's, he had received special permission to take his patient's files home with him. Because of the nature of his job, there was every chance that he could get a call at any time and would need to attend to one of his patients, and he simply had to have access to the specifics of their diagnosis, past history, and any type of potions they might be currently taking it. It was often an actual matter of life or death and the records department just had a few too many steps to make anything else a viable option. Obviously, there were files still in the records department, but copies had been made for his purposes.

Now that it was set in stone, that he would indeed be leaving therapy entirely to try his hand at teaching, he needed to return the records. He arrived and was allowed back, since everyone still knew him and expected him to be back once the Slytherins tore his idealistic heart in two.

An elderly woman named Doris typically handled filing but when Teddy entered the room he found, instead, one of the Mungo's interns. Doris was supposedly in Costa Rica and this kid, who had a lazy loll in his neck and eyes that rolled a bit too easily, was covering for her. Teddy realized all too quickly that, in the hands of this youngster, his patient's sensitive files would never be filed correctly. So Teddy offered to file them himself.

He realized now what had happened. Because a mere five minutes into the task, the teenager and claimed he needed to use the restroom. Now that another ten minutes had passed, Teddy was beginning to wonder if the boy was ever coming back. And then his files were done, but the files that the kid had not gotten too were just sitting out on the counter. So he began filing those away too.

And that's when he realized he had been tricked into doing the job of an intern.

Teddy was mad for about a minute, and considering just storming out then. But it left his good-natured body quickly. Mungo's had treated him well, and Doris has always been kind to him. He imagined she was going to come back from her vacation with days and days of work to be done, not to mention improperly filed papers everywhere else. Teddy had not had a busy day planned, and there was something therapeutic about the work. It was like having a really practical way to say good bye.

So that's what he did.
