Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Duelling Example Thread Empty Duelling Example Thread

The duelling rules have been updated since I wrote this. It's not completely useless, but some of the stuff (like luna's advanced blocking charm) is inaccurate.

Luna's posts will be in light cyan blue.
Neville's posts will be in light red.
Comments will be in normal text colour.

Luna had seen a new duelling arena in Diagon Alley. She decided to have a look, because it reminded her of all the fun she'd had when she joined Dumbledore's Army at school.

After paying the money for membership she looked around to see if there was anyone around to duel with.

"...she looked around to see if there was anyone around to duel with." Except in competition, all duels will be open to the first taker.

Neville had come to Diagon Alley today to buy some chomping cabbages, but he had had no luck. The herbologist who'd contacted him via floo had run out of stock just hours before he'd arrived and as chomping cabbages were so hard to breed in this part of the world, it was unlikely he'd have any new stock for quite some time.

As he trudged back up the alley, a large, new building caught his eye. Already being lost in thoughts of Asian plant life, the design of the place appealed to Neville's aesthetic and he looked up to see that it was a duelling arena. Interesting.

Neville was taking a tour of the place when he recognised someone across the room.

"Luna!" he exclaimed. "Er, would you like to, um..."

He gestured to the duelling platforms that were scattered around the room.

Notice how nobody is casting spells yet? You can't start duelling till an adjudicator tells you to begin.

Calli saw some people milling around in the duelling chamber. They probably wanted a duel, and since the only staff member of this place so far was herself, that meant she'd have to go oversee them.

She went up to the platform they'd chosen and smiled warmly. No need to scare away her first customers.

"I assume vetrans like you know formal duelling rules," she said, gesturing to a large yellow sign showing a figure bowing, or falling over, it was hard to tell.

"Well, best of luck. Begin."

After you've posted your introduction, you should wait for me (or someone else if I get staff) to tell you to start. THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you don't wait, I'll assume the duel is underway and won't read your thread.

It also prevents the person joining the thread from double-posting to get first blood.

"Oh hi, Neville," Luna stared at Neville's left ear. "Sure, it will probably scare the minkyfigs away. They seem very attracted to you."

Luna bowed to Neville and then raised her wand in the en garde position.

"Hmmmm... Allium Auris," she opened with the leek ear jinx.

defence: 100 - 0 (first blood) = 100
offence: Leek ear jinx
0 hits

Okay, these posts are going to get shorter now; that doesn't mean I think people RPing duels should write less in their duelling posts.

Notice the tally. Luna has 100 duelling points she deducts 0 points because she got first blood which means she doesn't have to block. She cast the leek ear jinx. She hasn't taken any hits.

Neville bowed back and before he knew it, he was blocking Luna's first jinx. She had gotten good at this over the years.

"Stygus," he countered.

defense: 100 - 14 (basic blocking charm) = 86
offense : stinging hex
0 hits

4 + 5 = 9. From the dice roll, we can see that Luna's offense was worth 9 points. I'm going to pretend that Neville isn't as good at duelling as Luna, so he's going to need to block for 150% of that, which is 13.5 (multiply 9 by 1.5). Because I don't like fractions, we round that up to 14 (if I rounded down, he wouldn't have blocked it effectively).

Now, Neville uses the stinging hex, and he's going to roll the dice as well, but because we're pretending he's not as good at duelling as Luna, he's only going to roll 1 dice.

Luna felt bad. The minkyfigs must really be messing with Neville's focus for him to be doing so badly. She waved away his stinging hex easily and returned one of her own.

defence: 100 - 2 (advanced blocking charm) = 98
offense: stinging hex
0 hits

Luna only has to defend for the same amount as Neville's hex (100% of it's casting amount) because she is more advanced, so her blocking charm is easier for her to do.

Neville blocked Luna's stinging hex and this time cast a hurling hex at her.

defence: 86 - 14 (basic blocking charm) = 72
