Jack needed the Ministry up and running ASAP.
On one hand, she was really glad her old mentee Teddy had been so much like her. It seemed that, when the Ministry had begun to fall, she and her insane brother and that blonde model-lady (yeah, she knew her name) had not been the only ones to run into the collapsing building to salvage something. No. Her old team, Teddy, Bernice, and Carnie had all had the same thought, but instead headed up to Department of Magical Creatures. They had not bothered with paperwork, knowing that if the new head was anything like Jack, there was a million copies of all of the files saved away in some vault. But they had went about releasing all of the non-dangerous animals capable of fleeing for themselves, before apparating out the more precious ones.
It was incredibly touching that her team had been so thoughtful. But they had not thought about where to house these animals. So Jack had temporarily converted the greenhouse into a dragon egg conservatory, pygmy puff rescue, baby hippogriff playpen, etc, etc. Her greenhouse, even magically expanded, was full to the brim of rescued creatures. And Jack had not revealed that to Max yet... Whoops!
Basically, the soonest she could get the Ministry up and running... the better.
Her cap had trapped her curls down, and gloved hands moved across fallen pieces of marble. A new Christmas sweater from Kip was keeping her warm as she picked her way downwards, following an old stairwell that had not collapsed. She was going to start at the very bottom with the Department of Mysteries and the courtrooms and cells and work her way up. A small band of people had chosen to follow her while others went to work on the lobby, deciding to start at the heart rather than at the brain.
