Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Money System Explained Empty Money System Explained

Post by Jess Potter Sun Feb 05, 2012 1:12 am

Hey guys!
So, the reason I’m writing this is because I’ve got a cool, exciting new system to talk to you all about. This system is aimed at making the money system actually work (finally!), making shops and jobs more fun for both employees and customers, and to give you guys an incentive to join in for this stuff.

So, I suppose I’d like to digress for a moment and give a bit of background. If you like, you may skip ahead to the boring rambling, but I’ll put this in for those who are interested.

When PA started we used a similar system to the one I’m about to pitch to you, however the problem we had then, and the problem that we’ve held in every system up until this day, is that after you purchased the first few items you had no reason to either earn more money to… well, buy nothing else, or to bother buying anything else.
Over time we tried to up the ante by providing more expensive items, such as houses, however this didn’t work because by that point we were basing the system off activity, thus it was impossible to create wealthy characters from scratch (a fair request in our eyes) so that system was also scrapped.

So, to summarise, the big problems we faced were people earning too much money, and having nothing to spend it on. Thus, when people had enough money to never want to see another sickle again in their life, they stopped working. When people stopped working, people stopped going to shops and bars, and which many of us found to be really disappointing, as often that was where the best socializing and RPing took place.

Now we think that we may have a solution!
This system which we’ve come up with will require full site participation, and everyone will need to work together in order for the rewards to be present. Basically, if you’re not willing to participate, know that you’re ruining it for everyone else, shame on you Razz

First off, we’re away from sickles. We’re rolling in Galleons now baby Wink

What we’ve decided is that to prevent you all from making too much money, we will be deducting a “cost of living expense” from your total amount of money, thus providing a proper incentive for work to occur, and thus interaction between members who may have never interacted with each other before.

So, I suppose that I’ve blabbed on enough, now I’ll get down to the nitty gritty.

We plan on reintroducing the Vault system at Gringotts bank. Every active member will be given a vault topic in which all their financial activity will be monitored. In this your income, purchases and cost of living expenses will be monitored and recorded so that a hard copy exists for us all to keep an eye on – this should help to avoid any confusion with the “I got paid twice, I paid for something twice” and so on so forth.

The way this will be run will be using a little bit of cooperation from you guys, as well as a fair bit of work on our end.

What we’ll need you guys to do is report your earnings (so the wages you get from your job) every week on a given day (Your vault number will reflect your day. Don’t worry! If your day isn’t ever going to suit you, just PM myself or another admin and we’ll gladly change it for you!) and the following day we’ll add that to your account and deduct your cost of living. (All wages will ensure that you break even, if you’re active at your job you WILL be paid)

There will also be tournaments for dueling and Quidditch being held as ways to earn high amounts of prize money, so keep your eyes peeled for those!

And that’s it for earnings!
Simple right?

Now, for purchasing items.

You needn’t worry about reporting purchases on a certain day or any of the mumbo-jumbo. Just tell us what you bought pretty much immediately after you do so and we’ll add it to your inventory, and deduct the cost from your total balance.

Of course, we’ve also updated the shops themselves so there will be plenty of things for you to buy and save up for. We’re confident that there wont be a single member out there who runs out of things to buy for years to come.

There is also going to be a changed system for shop owners. If you know that you have absolutely no interest in owning a shop on PA, I suggest you scroll down a little bit, but I personally think this is quite interesting.

To purchase a shop on PA we’re now going to ask for a payment of 75 Galleons from each buyer in order for them to purchase the shop. From this point on 2 for every 3 galleons earnt will go directly to the shopkeepers. The rest will be taken as “costs” for the items you are selling.

What will be required is for shop owners to report their transactions for the week, much the same as the standard wage, in their own vault topic, and much the same as the standard wage, we will take it from that point – adjusting your balance for you.

And finally (for this part anyway) shop owners will be required to monitor their employees’ activity and report to us whether or not they have actually earnt their wages or not. For the most part we will give the benefit of the doubt to all workers, and we want owners to be kind, however if there is 0 participation from employees, they will not earn any money, as is only fair.

As for the standard wage earners, such as Ministry employees and Teachers, we admins will monitor your activity for you. (Though reporting is still necessary on your part)

Now for the final point.

We understand that there is a predicament in this system, in that wealthy characters may not necessarily earn all their money, but rather be created as a character in the upper echelons of society. So, our explanation for this is that if you have a “Wealthy” character, you don’t use that wealth to buy IC items, rather it’s used for the accessories that may come with your character which we wont be covering, such as houses and ornate spindly… things. Your characters will still be expected to purchase wands, books, brooms and everything else like everyone else. The only exceptions that we can see being made for this are for canon characters who have a wealthy background that would be applicable to IC items.

As for any current members right now, we’ve given you enough money to start off with in order to buy all the necessities for your character – Your wand, robes, and maybe even a cheap broom if you so wish. All other items, as far as we are concerned were never purchased by your character, despite for the most part being available. Wands, we understand, are not going to only just be purchased by your character now, so you can deal with this in either a full on RP experience of purchasing an item, or rather an IC message to the shop owner saying “I would like this”

It’s your choice, but one is more fun than the other in my opinion.

And that’s it, I believe. If you have any questions, or even better, suggestions, please comment here, or send a PM to myself or any of the other admins. Please keep in mind that there are definitely going to be bugs in the path, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!

The Admin Team

P.S. I’ve created an example topic which can be found here for all of you to look at.

P.P.S. I’m posting this in announcements, educational decrees and the Gringotts forum itself.
