POTTER, James Sirius

MAIN
They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense

Character's Legal Name: James Sirius Potter

   Age: Twenty-six. b. 2004

   Hogwarts House: Gryffindor graduate

   Blood Type:  Halfblood

   Species: Human

   Face claim: Joseph Fiennes

APPEARANCE
...Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel - Harry often said that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig

James shares some of his father's looks - mainly the unruly mop of hair on his head, though. He looks more like his sister than his brother, particularly regarding their noses. He, too, has brown eyes. James has gotten better, over the years, at making himself look presentable. He'd always cared, but it wasn't until he entered the professional realm that he realized he needed to consistently look the part. So he's worked on taming his hair, keeping his facial hair to a decently short stubble, and has kept up Quidditch on the side to retain his physical state. Don't misunderstand - he isn't outrageously fit or overly built. Decent enough, sure, and unusual compared to his trimmer siblings. He has a rather kind face, though the most important and emotional moments are expressed through his eyes. Smooth smirks and wry smiles aside, the truth comes from his eyes rather than his stature or outward expression.

PERSONALITY
......If only the hat had mentioned a house for people who felt a bit queasy, that would have been the one for him

James has always been outrageous. In pranks, comments, and reactions - everything, really. He's been known to declare his own greatness, though most of the time it's done out of amusement or even sarcasm. He's become more cynical over the years, though he hides it well, and has lost his belief that love is something someone innately deserves. Otherwise, perhaps he wouldn't have lost the love of his life so easily. The people he cares for most, unfortunately, are the friends who go with him on adventures, or help him come up with new tricks and plans. Or, of course, the ones who sat beside him when he lost Jamie and contemplated the hundreds of ways they could destroy Elijah's life, before dragging him out on the pitch to make sure none of those things ever happened.

He has never been able to cut fun out of his life, no matter how much he needs to accomplish. During exams, he would waste hours playing Quidditch and Wizard's Chess, Gobstones and Exploding Snap. Even now, when he has a real job that requires attention a great deal of the time, he can't give up his Quidditch background. Overall, he believes that anything can be made into a game if a person finds the right angle, and that games are a great deal more fun than being bored and bummed out.

HISTORY
..................Hey! My eyes aren't 'glistening with the ghosts of my past'!

   Early Years:
The early part of James' life was quite normal, all things considered. They had a huge family, which could be overwhelming, but it was fun and generally positive and loving. James was, admittedly, a bit put off when Albus was born so soon after him. Actually, you could say he was a bit jealous. Or a lot. So as he grew up, hearing stories of his father and his namesakes, it was nothing short of definite that he would end up wanting to be like them. He dreamed of being popular, a hero, so on and so forth. But then the unthinkable happened.

His father, the greatest of his heroes, disappeared. Was declared dead. And then James had to watch as his mother started to crumble and their god-sibling, Teddy, tried his best to take care of everything. Predictably, it didn't work that way.

James refused to change his ways, regardless of their loss, because he firmly believed that James the first, Sirius and Harry would have expected it. That they would have been proud of him because of it. So he continued being a prat, continued believing that he could be as smooth, heroic and funny as the men that came before him. But in truth, the softer part of him - that pesky 'heart' thing people kept talking about - was aching. His godmother, Hermione, used to say that he was more tenderhearted than he dared admit. Not that she said it to him, of course. She'd said it to Ron one day, while he was at their house. But that scared him, and so he doubled up on his habits and mannerisms, refusing to show that weakness when his family needed strength.

   Hogwarts Years:
By the time James was sent off to Hogwarts, he'd become a master of fake happiness and fun and, of course, of pranks. Known best, perhaps, for his one-liners and nearly unrelenting sarcasm, James wasn't what you'd call the apple of his professors' eyes. He probably could have been, but he always got so distracted that he just didn't keep up with his work as well as he should have.

Distractions, to clarify, included harassing his classmates (and younger brother, as the years went on), playing Quidditch for Gryffindor as a Beater, and chasing after girls who inevitably were not interested in anything beyond his family legacy. Although, that was a bit tarnished after everything, so sometimes name-dropping got him in more trouble than it was worth.

He did well enough on his OWLs. Better than he'd truly anticipated, to be fair. But then Ginny passed as well. And James had no idea what to do. She'd only been sort of half-there for a while, and that had bothered him more than he cared to admit, but now they only had Teddy and the extended family. And, frankly, the aforementioned extended family didn't help as much as they should have. As much as they could have. So he just did what he always had done, though it was probably all the more obnoxious to his siblings. And it didn't help him form any sort of relationship with Teddy either. At least, not a strong one.

Sixth year, however, he met someone who seemed different somehow. Someone separate from all of the horror he'd been through, and someone who he trusted despite everything he'd seen go wrong. Jamie Prophet, who he got to know after a holiday dance, was his girlfriend through to seventh year. He'd thought that he would be perfectly welcome to propose once graduation came, and had everything planned out. He could be romantic when he wanted to be, considering his many years of planning pranks and whatever else. But then his whole plan was foiled, because he found out that Jamie had cheated on him with - wouldn't you guess it - Elijah Krum. It broke his heart, yes, but it made him that much more cynical than he had been before getting to know her.

So although he did focus on exams and the Quidditch cup and on figuring out what in the world he wanted to do after graduation, his outrageous personality went back to how it had been before he toned it down. After all, he couldn't very well go around being as flirtatious as he usually was, considering Jamie. But there was nothing left to hold him back after that, and so he just went back to normal. But underneath the joking and goofing around, James became less willing to consider real relationships. He could hardly remember the love his parents shared, had witnessed the near-divorce his godparents went through, and now had been positively ruined by someone he'd thought he would never lose.

   After Hogwarts:
James had no idea what he wanted to do after graduation. None at all. So he played Quidditch for a few years with the Falmouth Falcons. But he shadowed his Aunt and Uncle at the Ministry every now and then, trying to come up with an idea. One day, during Hermione's lawyer phase, James was contemplating just becoming a professional Quidditch player or sports reporter. But then she was called in to handle a case regarding the Statute of Secrecy and some incident or other that involved far more Muggles than it should have. He went with her, expecting nothing particularly out of the ordinary, but it was then that he realized what he wanted to do.

A group of Muggles had been attacked and seriously injured by some rogue, presumably, Death Eaters. He'd never seen someone so scared, including his family after each loss they'd experienced. So he knelt in front of one of the women, healing her wounds even as she stared at him. He felt like he was the wild, injured animal because of the way she looked at him. Not her. But then he watched as an Obliviator came over, and wiped away that fear and disbelief. And the woman was able to go back to her life without any of the terror that James, himself, could not wipe from his own life.

So he took up a training program, and was instated as a proper Obliviator a year later, when he was twenty four. At first, it was enough for him on its own. But he missed Quidditch too much, and enjoyed playing it with his old schoolmates on weekends. So he contacted the DWN and became a part-time sports reporter, as well. That way he had something to do on his days off, and he could use his previous experience and father's name for something more simple and positive. The only problem, though, is that it reminds him of the fact that their family is incredibly estranged, and that he hasn't done nearly enough to make up for the time lost. Perhaps he'll man up, one day and reach out properly.

Other People

Significant Other/s: Previously, Jamie Prophet. He was cheated on, so let's just say it ended badly.

Biological Mother: Ginny Weasley Potter (deceased)

Biological Father: Harry Potter (deceased)

Siblings:
Albus Severus Potter.
Lily Luna Potter.
also Edward "Teddy" R. Lupin, adopted brother (basically).

Other Family Members: There are lots. Weasleys. Delacours. Plus the "family" if you count the Longbottoms and Grangers and such.

Does your character look up to anyone? His father, of course. And his mother, though she deteriorated a bit after Harry's passing. That bit he's slightly disappointed in, but he gets it.

Does your character particularly dislike anyone? Elijah Krum, though it's more of a lingering distaste as opposed to any real hatred. He feels it, but would never express it outwardly.
