Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Canon headcanons Empty Canon headcanons

Post by Teddy R. Lupin Mon Jul 14, 2014 6:48 pm

An odd question at an odd time. So I know a lot of us have head canons of our canon character'a families. For example, Roxanne Weasley introduced Lily to heavy partying, and Teddy is good friends with Sawyer Weasley and his long term fiancée. How do we ensure that we don't have people making a Roxanne who has never drank a drop or a Sawyer who has never had a girlfriend? I know these have been conflicts in the past and I was wondering if a system we could develop for this.

D'you think we could put a note somewhere on the Canon list of who has that character? Or something similar to direct new people or people looking to add a canon character to the person in question?

It happens for people who have school or whatever the case but can't get on a lot and then things change, too. Like, for my characters, I use the Polyvore sets, but not everyone on PA uses them, obviously. Maybe we can put a section in Character Extras or something where each person can do a thread with little blurbs about things they learn or decide about their headcanons? It could work like my Thread Tracker, where I have a post for each person, and then when I trade characters out I just replace that post with the new character.

I guess the problem for a lot of us is that we don't think to write things down. We just know them. But if we don't write them down and someone new comes in, it's hard to correct them or something when we haven't taken the time to put it all down. Y'know? Like, I'm sure some of us get frustrated but it's not like the other person could have known, either. Maybe there should just be a rule that if you want to use a canon, you have to talk to the person/people holding canons related to yours. Even if they're not of the same last name. Like that person would have to approve it? It sounds kind of harsh I guess, but it might keep the confusion down if nothing else.

I mean, it worked for me and Keira, when I made a Zabini, and it's working for me and Emily with the Connolly sister. But that doesn't mean it will always be something that works out.

That's what I'm wondering. I'm not really sure how to do it. I mean, some things aren't fair for us to claim. For example, I imagine Roxanne Weasley looks like Willa Holland, but whose to say I have to force someone to keep that face? However, it throws a wrench in MY plotting if they change her entire history/plotting. Now, my relation to her is not through direct relation, but it's still important. That's where this thing becomes a grey area.

And it's not just for people who want to potentially claim the characters. It also helps establish PA canon. It's a bit awkward if in one post I talk about Roxanne being a party girl, but her other cousin talks about how she's a lovely, church-going girl who has never done a wrong thing in her life.

Maybe we post by family? So whoever had someone in that family the longest/first would get a thread where they could discuss their thoughts and anyone who needed a Headcanon to go a certain way, they could post and come to an agreement so in the end they're all edited into the main post of the topic and in one place.

So Emily would do Gisele and them, Keira would do the Zabinis, I'd do Connolly, Hit or you or whoever it is would do Weasleys, etc. We would just have to determine who has each thread based on activity.

I'm not sure if it's actually plausible, but it might could be a thing. It could include future children from ships and things like that, too. EDIT: people could apply to run the topic, and of the people with characters, whoever has been most active gets to lead them? Dunno.

I'm up for this.

I wanted to do it with the last canon list but it got too much. It's a big ask. It'd be great if it was a member contributed database, though. Really, really great.

Really, it could work for all families, even beyond Canons. Like how Keiran is kind of Rookwood but mostly not. Or how there're like a billion Ivanovs now. Each head of family or whatever could put in their name for running the thread in some Headcanon section, and then the staff could sort out who gets to have at it. I dunno if that takes up too much time for the Admins, though.

Well, maybe what we could do is have a little thread for each family and every member can contribute a little bit and they can thrash it out together there, so long as everyone's respected, etc.

Then they can work out the bulk and make a main one that's neat and orderly. C:

Yeah. The problem would be people that joined later or have been away not knowing the changes and any fights that come from that. So it'd have to be watched to some extent, I fear.

Would it make any sense to do a sort of 'headcanon' forum? Maybe under an information section. Each major family could get a topic (written and updated by the major players in the family) but also things like other magic schools and such. I'd love to see the site do some discussion about Beauxbatons and Salem for example. I have my own headcanons but I'm not sure they line up with everyone else and it would be good to compare and get our thoughts out.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. A new slot would open a lot of options.
