Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Debating . . . Empty Debating . . .

Post by Hallie Cooper Fri Apr 25, 2014 8:04 pm

Hey guys, I'm really debating about leaving behind the world of RP and PA.

For the past few weeks my threads have been really slow moving, which I understand as people have exams and such, but now I've lost the motivation if I'm honest because, well, because of my characters.

1. Hallie. I love Hallie, she is my favourite character, she is the most fun for me to use but I feel as though her journey is coming to a close. She's happily married and pregnant with Theodore, she has overcome loads of crap in her life and has finally reached the other side. She's almost completed her auror training and in her future I can only see:
A happy life with Theodore and her child working at the auror office.
If her and Theodore have another argument of some sort then, for Hallie, it would most certainly be the end of their relationship but she'd continue as she is. She'd carry on working in the auror office and she'd have their baby and try and make raising him or her work.
Either way I feel Hallie's story has reached the happily ever after stage and I sort of don't want to cause any random drama just for the sake of it. I feel this is what Hallie has been working for and now she's achieved what she set out to do. Her journey has come full circle. - This makes me unbelievable sad but happy at the same time. Hallie <3

2. Amelia. Again, her journey is practically complete too. I see her working at Hogwarts until she retires. She'd probably always remains as the Ravenclaw Head of House and charms Professor during that time as she wouldn't want to progress to anything beyond deputy head. She'd make a wonderful Grandma and then find a new love or strong friendship in Brant Crawford.

3. Bertie. Even though he is a student and I love the character to bits I feel there is nowhere to go anymore with him. He is fun to roleplay with but I can never really get him into any plots purely because of the type of character he is. He's not the type to get himself into awful situations, and if he did end up being blackmailed or something dark and twisty like that then he'd simply report it.
For Bertie I can see his future. He'd complete Hogwarts, find a sweet romantic girl and the pair would travel the world. Bertie would publish a book about his travels and become an author. His first love wouldn't be his only love. They'd argue, they'd fall out, he'd move on.

4. Litherlands. Cupid, as much as he wants to be famous. He wont as he is trying to be something he isn't. He wants to be famous for being bold blah blah blah and he wont, really he should try for a talent but his talent isn't fameworthy. He's a bit lost because he's set on the fame thing and when it finally hits him during his mid twenties it will never happen he'll simply give up. Become a sad empty shell and just find a job that pays the bills. Becca. Well, she'll pass her exams and then go onto doing magical research. I think, up to know, Becca's history is the one that remains most unclear but I'm not overly attached to the character and my muse for her is forever backwards and forwards unlike my Hallie muse that has always been high.

5. Mary Mist. She'll just continue teaching divinations until she get's fired. Then BAM. Midlife crisis. She'll find a muggle when she is in her mid forties, they'll accept her for who she is and she'll be so head over heels in love that her she will stop crying. They'll adopt a child, have a nice house in the suburbs, work part time and enjoy being a part time house wife.

6. Henry. He'll get onto harder drugs such as Pixie Dust. He'll then have no money to pay for it, he'll start robbing places, eventually it will begin to eat him alive. He'll attempt to make his own drugs. BAM. Explosion and he is lying in St Mungo's before he attempts to get clean. - The most fun character I have left whose story could go either way and is nowhere near it's end.

7. Pansy. Like Henry she is one of the few characters that I have left that I still enjoy and can continue to be used.

8. Alexander. New Slytherin on the block. Same as Pansy really.

9. Natalie George. New Gryffindor on the block. Same as about.

So really, out of all the characters I have most of their journeys have come to an end or I can see the end and feel that I simply can't RP with them anymore :/

The only ones I'd want to carry on using are:
Pansy, Alexander, Natalie & Henry.

I am debating about leaving or just sticking with those four characters. They're the only ones I'm interested in, roleplaying-wise. They're the most fun, their journeys aren't anywhere near over. Maybe make a new one too to keep motivation up and make me feel that excitement about having a new baby to look after like I do with Alexander and Natalie.

Thoughts?
Obviously I wouldn't love to leave but I'm starting to feel that that's the only option :/

Just going to offer my two cents here, but I can see where you're coming from. Ask anyone on this site and they'll tell you I have a history of leaving and then coming back, just kind of how I am because I really can't get into my characters. A thing I've been trying to do though when it came to RPing is finding some sort of issue with my character, a constant problem that they always have to deal with, coupled with the issues that people also throw at them as well. Gordan is my only character I have at this point, but I seem to be able to get into him really well, just because it's always a challenge to find out what he'd say and how he'd say it.

Maybe that's just what you need. From what you say about your characters, they all seem to be on the right track, as if they know what they're doing and they have little to no worries about what comes tomorrow. Try finding a good idea with others that will enable you to have some extremely worrying situations, but more along the lines of psychological stress. Sure, when it comes down to choosing a road to take, it's almost black and white. So find some other ideas that you can put your characters through, have them grow and become stronger by dealing with some insane challenge that you'd normally think would be impossible.

Or maybe even try making a new character that has some sort of strange quirk. I remember a while ago that there was a mute character on the site, and that was a really awesome idea. It allowed for some new perspectives, new challenges that came with dealing with others. Really was a good idea, but my own characters at the time were pretty flat and two dimensional.

The final option I can offer is to maybe take a break from all the RPing, it really is a draining thing to do if you are enjoying it. After some time, your mind will begin to have those 'all or nothing' choices, and those are never fun. Take some time off, read a couple of new books see a new movies, then come back with some new ideas that you can try out for your characters. Maybe even kill of some of your own characters right now and focus only on a select few, once you've got some really good ideas for them.

I'm by no means an expert on all this, but I do hope you find the answer you're looking for. It's always nice to have more regulars around on this site Very Happy

Hey I understand everything you are saying so much.
Like all my characters don't really have anything going on with them.

Pansy is kind of involved in the site plot in that she is helping try and uncover it or spark others to investigate it.
Henry is going through his drug addiction, which is really fun because I've been enjoying looking at the different issues that it can bring with it.

I tried thinking of some new idea for Hallie to throw her way but I can't find anything justifiable, which is sad because she is my main character and I feel like NOW is the time to end her journey. So I think, with Hallie, I'm going to take a break for a little bit - Unless someone can come up with an amazing idea, and if you do PLEASE let me know as I love her so much. (Which is weird seeing as she is fictitious but I've grew so attached to her and know her so well)

I think I may take a few days (maybe a week) away and see how I am. If I forget about roleplaying completely then, well, then we'll see if I do end up returning. If I can't keep away then clearly I do want to say.

I feel like I'm making bit of a deal out of nothing :/

I wouldn't say you're making a big deal of nothing. I had a couple days over Christmas Break where I wasn't sure I wanted to keep on the site, either, though that was mostly due to the site plot. Granted, not the same thing, but you get the point. It took coming up with new plots and problems to really get me excited. I'm not sure if it's the same for you, but sometimes when posting is slow it gets me down and I lose the excitement for the plot. Sometimes, that's equally my fault, regardless of who I'm writing with.

Maybe just wait until after finals and try and start some things? See how it goes when people have more time?

Everyone is going to find that time when they have to leave, but it's also a bummer for the rest of us - nearly as much as whoever leaves - because we miss the characters. That said, none of us would want to hold you back if you didn't have something keeping you around PA. If you think of anything you want to do with my new folks, I can hurry and get the other two posted and active! Holland is up, so she's good to go if you think any of your folks would find her interesting, or the other way around. Sometimes I feel like it just takes talking about the characters a lot to get excited about the weird parts of them. If you want to PM me on Keiran or Avery's, we could just chat about our folks and see if we think of anything!

I WAS THAT MUTE CHARACTER.

I'd take a few days, hun. I've had this feeling about a half dozen times. Twice I left, and twice I just took a few days. By May/June people will be posting like crazy ad you'll miss it.
