Jack had a strange connection to the Jarveys that had something to do with their shared vocabulary. She was in the market to take one home, honestly, but she was not putting that on blast, because somehow, with her luck, she would end up with a herd of them, when she knew she could only afford the one. So she heard a scuffle from the Jarvey compartment as she did her rounds checking in on animals and she moved towards the sound.
The Jarveys were not under her care, but her role in the department gave her most of Zoe's privileges, like the right to interfere at any time, without putting her name on blast. All she had to do was work hard, and it seemed all she did was work. Ever since she had returned for Azkaban, her work was all that kept her from slipping back into all the bad habits she had picked up- her hands were still recovering. So she stayed in her department, jumping from person to person, creature to creature, doing what she could.
She slipped into the compartment in time to hear a cal and see a mad ball of fur flinging itself towards her. Jack was not smarter than anyone, she was not perfect, nor sespecially talented. But her way with animals was so natural Zoe always questioned if she had not been an animal in her previous lives. Jack felt any and all fear leave her, the little that there might have been there in the first place exiting quickly, and her Quidditch reflexes proved their worth.
She grabbed the Jarvey by the middle and it shook itself, dipping its head to bite her. She spread her thumb over the back of his nexk, pressing his chin down against her hand so he was clamped there. He struggled, his claws scratching her arm. She could deal with scratches and they hardly registered. She reached her other han and pinched his scruff, holding him by the scruff above the ground like the mother would do. He thrashed and then went limp.
She looked at the woman handling the animals. "First Jarvey assignment? Always nueter the males the second you get them in- their testosterone levels get out of control."
