What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Be Fearless in the Pursuit of What Sets Your Soul on Fire

He didn't want to do it, but he'd gone home to see his parents after the school year ended. He sort of had to, given the boys weren't seventeen yet and had no other option without a floo or portkey on hand. But you know what he did have on hand, reader? Tucked away inside that jacket with the extended pocket, Apollo had hidden that all-important journal. The one Christian would never know about or be able to read even if he did. Lily's spellwork had proven itself to be phenomenal yet again.

They had taken the carriages to Hogsmeade and been picked up by Daphne, but the ride down had been a nightmare itself. He'd hopped in a carriage with Christian, Ace, and a couple of fourth years that had heard more about him than he wished. So although by the time they arrived he'd started to wish that hell would freeze over with those kids inside it, he forcibly cooled himself off. The time had arrived. He just had to wait a day or two before he could escape with excuses of the Minister needing his help and his apprenticeship and taking on more hours.

None of them were technically untrue, but they were obviously not the biggest reason for him to take off.

Love, he'd written in the little note he'd managed to sneak out without anyone noticing,

I'm not sure if you've left the castle yet. I'll be back at the flat tomorrow night, at seven. If you're free, I'd obviously love to see you. Wouldn't recommend that you write back, given the company I'm being forced to keep. But you can, of course, get through the wards if you decide you can make it.

Hopeful and still yours,
Apollo.

The name bit was a risk, perhaps, but whatever. He hadn't included hers, so perhaps that could be worked around. Students were all over as they tried to find safe ways home, and he had no qualms about making something up despite his final journal entry. No, he didn't want to lie. But he also trusted Lily to be careful or already on her way home if she were lucky.

The letter sent off, he got back to packing up his things and proceeded to pretend for another evening that he cared for his father's opinions. Blaise, of course, was trying to convince him that tradition and taking care of the family was more important than taking care of strangers. Would he really want to abandon his mother like that?

Not a very good argument, that. Particularly when one considered that Apollo had always felt pretty abandoned by her. Plus the whole thing about how normal people got jobs and somehow didn't lose their families because of it. But, y'know, oh well or something? Either way, it did nothing to persuade him in Blaise's direction, but plenty in his own. So while Christian stayed up playing chess with Daphne, Apollo took to his room for a decent night's sleep. After all, he had a lot to do the next day.

He woke early, announced his departure after an uninspiring and tense breakfast, and pretended like he didn't care when their mother actually looked relieved. Fine. That was fine. He hadn't expected disappointment. Christian, mind, allowed a flash of jealousy to cross his expression before he turned back to what was left of his meal. The Hufflepuff would end up leaving a couple days later, but mainly because the shop's business would pick up as kids from Hogwarts came out to buy summer sport supplies. But also because, inevitably, Ace would find a reason to come looking for him and he wanted to be there. Plus, he sure couldn't invite Charlotte over to his childhood home. Ace was quite right about that, despite everything.

But, anyway. Apollo had things to attend to before he could properly settle in at the flat. His bags were dropped off in the open-floor living room before he took the floo over to the shop and made his way around Diagon Alley to pick up the things he'd decided he needed. Not that he'd warned Lily about any of it.

He couldn't wait to get back. He had so much to do and wanted things to be sorted out just right before she showed up.

So, laden with bags, he made his way back to his flat. But, just like before Christmas, she'd beaten him to it.

"I hope I don't do anything wrong."

This was not the sort of interaction that Apollo wanted to have with Professor Lupin. Not after the talk spreading around, not after he'd messed up so badly in the one class that he desperately needed to do his best. The past week had been a struggle. A challenge that he didn't know he needed to overcome until it was too late. And now he was paying for his mistakes.

Biting down on the inside of his cheek, Apollo climbed the stairs to the fourth floor, just hoping that the headmaster wasn't around. He couldn't deal with both of them. In fact, he had been avoiding Hayes as best as he could. The party was possibly his biggest mistake ever, but he couldn't bring himself to regret it. It had led to Christmas with Lily. But it had made everything so, incredibly complicated.

He hesitated, fidgeting a little, before tugging the chain on his charm so he could lift it out of his school robes. Clutching it for a moment, he waited for Lily to respond despite the fact that she couldn't have known why. Then he put it away as he walked up to Teddy's office, almost frowning when he saw that the door was partly open. It meant, on the one hand, that he didn't have to wait to see the professor's response to the Slytherin showing up. On the other, Apollo was out of time.

Keeping a respectful amount of distance between himself and the doorway, he reached forward and knocked.

change will come, it's on it's way.

In a roundabout way, she was following Clytemnestra's advice, despite how quickly she had denied its usefulness. She knew how word spread through Hogwarts and was almost certain the other Slytherin had heard of it and was probably feeling pretty proud of herself. Lily wasn't happy that it had come to this. Not one bit.

But days had passed and the burn she had spotted on Apollo's hand had still not gotten any better. It was the last straw. She had seen him withdrawing, had heard stories that he was being short with his classmates, had Lux tattling on him, had seen younger Slytherin students draping themselves over him... Something was going on and despite the fact that she was supposed to trust him to come back to her all in one piece at the end of the year... she just didn't. Not now that he had been injured somehow and had done nothing about it.

She knew she could speak with him alone, and if he got a detention on his own, rumors would fly. But there was only two (maybe three) people in Hogwarts who could be 'present' while she spoke with him. And unfortunately for Ace, Christian had been pairing up with Waldorf more and more in classes, leaving Ace to bounce between Molly and Apollo. Today it was Apollo. And, in all honesty, who would suspect anything with Hogwarts' watchdog present.

The opportunity presented itself when Ace started berating Apollo for something - deviating from the instructions even though his route made for a more potent draught - and he was either flustered or angry or his burn was much worse because he dropped the paring knife and nearly sliced Ace's index finger off. He snatched up the knife, knocking into his cauldron, which began to tip.

"Zabini! Longbottom! Detention!"

Christian gave her a wide-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights look and she had to wave him off. Ace was swelling in indignation, having been no more obnoxious than her usual level, and she was pretty sure Apollo wasn't exactly pleased either. She only felt bad for Ace. Apollo should have seen it coming. It was long overdue.

She had chosen a time when the rest of the castle would probably still be at dinner and waited at her desk for the knock. She called for them to come in and was glad to see they had come together. She asked they close the door and glanced at Ace, who had crossed her arms and was looking as though the world was out to get her. She chewed on her bottom lip as Lily cleared her throat. "Ace, why don't you... read chapter seven in Advanced Potion Making? Apollo, I have something in my office I need help with."

A cloud passed over Ace's face. Oh. This was why she was being given a detention. Because she had offered to help. Right. Yes. This seemed fair.

Lily turned and walked to her office, holding the door open for Apollo so he could in. She closed the door behind them.

On the desk was a bowl with essence of dittany. She didn't think she'd have to tell Mr. Soon-To-Be Totally-Knew-Better-Than-To-Leave-A-Burn-Untreated Healer. She looked at him pointedly, before sliding the bowl towards him.

"For Christmas? Oh, I just stayed in the flat."

The next morning came with the understanding that this break would be the last of their time together for, well, quite some time. Neither seemed willing to say it, though, as they woke up, greeted each other, or dressed for the day. Apollo found a new toothbrush and gave her free reign of his closet and chest of drawers, and within an hour he was making fun of her assurances that she could make great toast - but very little else. As suggested the night before.

Things were... the same. In most ways, at least. But there was a mutual understanding that they had done something meaningful for both of them. Sure, she didn't know the ins and outs of his feelings about it, but he got the feeling he knew hers. After all, he'd been part of the team to save her from it. And Apollo doubted very much that his desire to protect her would ever really go away. But he liked to think that his version of that would be one she could condone. It wasn't like he was going to try and keep her out of an incident after the night before. That was for damn certain.

And he did trust her. She had no real way of knowing that he would react so horribly, so vehemently. His stilted explanations of his childhood probably hadn't really given the impact he'd hoped they would. But he didn't think for a minute that she would try it again.

So he was pleased with the day passed a general tendency to do.. whatever they felt like. At some point, they ended up just splayed out on the couch, watching horrible Muggle telly and taking the mick while they just enjoyed having a space that was theirs alone. Sure, it was one flat with a couple of rooms, but for the time being, it was theirs. And they had full permission to be as embarrassingly cuddly as they pleased. Apollo had never really pictured himself as the sort of person that wanted extended amounts of physical contact, but his circumstances had changed. At least for now. Perhaps, in the future when they had time, it wouldn't feel so important.

Or maybe Lily was just addicting. Guess he'd just have to wait and find out. Not that he minded.

He didn't find an excuse to leave the flat that day, likely because it had yet to fully register that she wouldn't be going anywhere. But that was a bonus in itself, because he didn't have to change out of his pajama bottoms, and could instead try and figure out how to sneak out to pick up at least something for her as a Christmas gift. It didn't feel right not to, but he also had no idea what he could possibly pick out. He probably glanced at her a few too many times that afternoon, trying to decipher something from her mannerisms or words.

Merlin help him, but perhaps he was a rubbish boyfriend after all.

Pushing that to the back of his mind, he got up from the couch at some point to work on making something for them for dinner. By the time the owl arrived, he had one arm around Lily's waist while his other hand nudged at the hash going on the stove. Apollo set the spoon down and stepped across to the window, taking the letter with a muttered thanks to the bird before they took off again. Unsurprisingly, it was from his father. The letter from Christian would shop up the next night, but this one was a bit more worrying.

In truth, he had expected it to be from his brother. Frowning at it, he returned to Lily's side, handing it to her before checking on the meal again. Many things registered in that moment. First, he didn't care if Lily saw anything that was addressed to him. Even from his family. Second, he might have thought that through a bit more, considering his parents thought he had broken up with her. And third, he was anxious about opening it, so he'd handed it to her in hopes that she would do so instead.

Asking her to read it out, he moved to pull down a set of plates, cups and silverware. He just ended up stopping and staring at her, though.

Son,

We received a letter from your brother about an hour ago, telling us that the pair of you were safe. Of course, we had heard from that friend of yours that she had taken you two over to your flat. Don't think we won't be talking about that after this is all settled. For now, I'm afraid we will not be able to spend the holidays at home. But you needn't fret - we will have the gifts to you upon your return to Hogwarts.

Until we understand why this happened, stay where you are. And keep track of Christian for your mother.

And then he'd not even bothered to sign off, because who else could it be from?

Apollo had rolled his eyes at the reference to Christmas presents, despite his earlier fretting, but by the end of it he was just looking at her with a bland sort of expression on his face. There wasn't much to be said, really. But at least they knew Christian was fine at Ace's house, now.

Clearing his throat, Apollo got to work, divvying up portions for each of them. "So. What do you want to do tomorrow? I can go down to the center of town and get us a tree if you want."

Us. Merlin.
