Rafael had an old soul. He was a little bit naive to the raging
hormones that teenagers had. He was an adult in every sense
of the world bar physicality and age. He’d never really
expressed much interest in sex and the whole facade that
surrounded the act that wasn’t meant to be done on the whims
it was today. Jaret was convinced that his brother was some
sort of alien. It was clear that Jaret was affected by said
raging hormones. Rafael could see that Mynah was too although
she hid it terribly well. It was just Nicolai, Raina and himself.
Although really, Nicolai’s odd urges that didn’t involve breaking
glass were beginning to come into fruition and Raina wasn’t
going near boys any time soon. She was seven and there was
only so much kiss chase in the playground that Rafael would
allow. If he had his way then it would be none but her teachers
called him paranoid. Perhaps he was but the last thing in the
world that he wanted was for his little sister to get hurt. Mynah
was a big girl, she’d cry and turn to him for comfort before
brushing herself off and getting back up again. Jaret was the
one doing the heartbreaking on his part so he didn’t care and
Nicolai was just as bad except he was breaking bank accounts
instead of hearts. And Raina...she was too young to understand
which was why he wanted to shield her from it until she burst
from all of the coddling. Then there was him. He was neither
broken-hearted nor causing such occurrences. He wouldn’t
have been able to anyway. It wasn’t his nature. It was all a bit
too confusing for Rafael. Love and lust were two completely
different things but they were woven so closely now that rarely
people knew the difference.
“Blankets, candles and a hell of a lot of firewood,” Rafael
grinned and remembered donning an axe and making Jaret
go with him to one of the parks where they went scrumping.
Of course it wasn’t scrumping for veggies or fruit but instead,
firewood. He could remember how cold they were out in the
ghastly weather in nothing but their pyjamas, boots and
oversized coats that would probably never fit either of the boys.
But it was worth it in the end. After stealing a bin and emptied
the contents onto the snowy ground, they managed to lug it
back to the house and load it up with the wood. Jaret had
supplied the lighter and Rafael had covered a piece of paper in
cooking oil to ensure a flame. Of course Jaret had taken a few
drags of a cigarette before setting the damn thing alight. To be
fair, the two boys had shared it while the girls huddled together
and Nicolai complained that they weren’t being fair. Oddly
enough it was Jaret that had said that it was a bad idea for
someone of Nicolai’s age to start smoking. He was such a
hypocrite but Rafael was just proud that Jaret was willingly
deterring his brother from killing himself in the way that Jaret
was at an alarming rate. Rafael had the odd one now and again
and God was it worth it. Terrible habit mind you. One that
Rafael broke before he even began. One cigarette would do him
for the rest of the year. Unlike his chain-smoking brother he
didn’t need constant stress relief. Rafael worked the best when
he was under stress because he knew he didn’t have a choice.
Getting to his feet, Rafael stretched. He heard some of his bones
click back into their sockets and he smiled sleepily before
running a hand through his hair. He watched as a glass of Fire-
Whisky zipped past him and he looked down at Sophia with an
amused smile on his face. “Don’t worry about it.” He shrugged.
Alcohol only bothered him when that little sod of a brother he
had came home reeking of it and some non-descript scent that
was a mixture of woman’s perfume and sweat. Of course any
normal teenager his age would have probably figured out what
said scent was but our darling little hero is still, regretfully, naive
and has been since the first paragraph so it’s unlikely to change.
He sent the near empty bottle of cider back to the punch table
with a flick of his wand and a new one came sailing his way. He
caught it before it could hit anyone or anything and flipped the
cap off.
He swirled the drink around slightly before taking a good
amount into his mouth. He swallowed it and felt the warmth of
the alcohol spread around his body. “To the field then!” Rafael
grinned, gently taking Sophia’s open hand within his own. She
was definitely safer this way, he tried to convince himself. It
wasn’t because he wanted to hold her hand at all.
Liar a
voice in the back of his mind teased. Rafael felt his cheeks
flush with colour and he took a step forward, making sure he
had his footing before deciding to set off.
