Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. New Spells Empty New Spells

Post by Sandra Archer Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:36 pm

Well. I'm finally addressing my biggest issue with the Harry Potter series.

Warning: This may seem like a rant at first, but it has a point. Trust me.

My biggest problem with the world of Harry Potter has always been Avada Kedavra and Stupefy. They symbolize to me, more than anything else, laziness. I mean think about it. They're the only spells you need to ever duel. If you're a bad guy, avada kedavra. If you're good, Stupefy. They're the only spells you'll ever need, and so there's no need for JK Rowling to "waste" her time coming up with creative, inventive ways to use magic in battle. I abhor using Avada Kedavra and Stupefy when I duel. It's just so...plain.

Now, obviously we can't just get rid of the spells. They're vital to the Potterverse, AK especially. But I'm sure there are others who share my opinion, and I'm sure these people would love new spells to use.

Think about it. Magic has 5 laws, according to Hermione, and only 1 is stated explicitly in the series. And yet not a single wind spell was used in Harry potter. For example. In the ministry duel, I wanted Sandra to send a gust of wind at her opponents, kicking up loose gravel and fire to create a kind of storm styled attack. I searched the internet, but to no avail. So i had to make it up on the spot

So what if the privvy member came up with spells themselves? Nothing ground breaking, just like a spell that sends lightning at someone. Or a spell that splits the ground between someone. Or one that makes the wall transparent. You know, spells that could exist with the Potterverse, but technically don't because Rowling never mentioned them.

Thoughts?

New Spells Empty Re: New Spells

Tis a good idea, i think we should pursue it
Now, we did come up with a few, if you look in our spell compendium, and there was sort of a wind spell, tempesta, but mariana sort of ruined it by just continually shouting 'tempesta quick everyone make the storm keep going' so i started ignoring it, if we make spells we need to set certain boundaries, fiendfyre is a never ending spell, yet people use it to just throw at people, tempesta was made as a never ending spell, but it's just annoying, it was a weather thing, not an attack thing.

So if we make it, it needs to be very specific, however i'm very open to suggestions. If there's any particualr spells you can suggest, please do.

Oh, Fiendfyre. You'll have to excuse me for a second...

#&#@^#*#%&$#@#$#&@!

That's better. For my more intelligible thoughts on Fiendfyre, check below, though it isn't really necessary.

Spoiler:
/endrant

Anyway, back on subject...

yeah, Tempesta was a wind spell I suppose, but I imagined it as a whirlwind more than a focused gust. Specific ones I would suggest? Things along the line of-

Diripio- Tears the earth in front of someone
Fumidus- Fills a room with smoke
Aqua Caedo- Water surrounds a person's head and drowns them
Helder- Makes something transparent

well i always imagined it as more of something like the rainstorm in the Ministry office in the Deathly Hallows, you know, where the DE complains it's raining in his office, so i always thought of it like the old cartoons where a storm would float over someone unlucky's head, just bigger

I like those spells, but if you could just be a bit more specific
Duration in particular
and we share similar thoughts on fiendfyre i see

Yeah i never found some long list of destructive spells apart from Tempestas which you said was bugging you so i came up with combining spells on my own using basic laws of science.

Like you mix Aquamenti + Inscendio and make curtain of smog
Combine actual storm spell with Aquamenti or Inscendio and send enforced fire/water storms

Diripio- Tears the earth in front of someone (i don't think that one actually has some duration. It just desroys and dissappears)
Fumidus- Fills a room with smoke (again smog clears up after a minute or two no biggie there)
Aqua Caedo- Water surrounds a person's head and drowns them (no specified duration needed only untill it has whome to drown should be sufficent)
Helder- Makes something transparent (yeah that one needs duration)

Obviously Diripio and Aqua Cadeo would be advanced spells only usable by Aurors and such. (Just a note)

Diripio- It's a tear in the earth. Not terribly deep, but will stay there until mended (with the spell I just thought of, contraho)

Aqua Cadea- Lasts as long as the caster concentrates or until someone else breaks the spell, either by breaking caster's focus or disrupting the water.

Fumidus- What Mari said, clears up after a few minutes.

Helder- One or two minutes depending on the caster's level.

Before anything happens you'll need to speak with Darren and show all this. But I'm all for it, I like the idea of having new spells.

Tis a good idea. But see the problem with your spells, and with most of the spells is that people abuse them. For example, there are no boundaries in the spells you made. People could use them like how they use Tempestas, which I originally meant as a storm spell, but now its being abused, as Jess said.

Anyhow, I've started editing the spell compendium a bit more. Its probably going to take a while before its fully done.

I think we should really start enforcing rules like that, it kinda takes the fun out of PA...
