Poppy yanked the hood of her robe as far over her head as it would go, while the divination teacher continued to lecture her about lying. She thrust a hall pass at Poppy and pointed to the door. The other students in the class were laughing at her, and she was feeling completely humiliated. She picked up her books and left in a hurry and scurried down the tower stairs and down the corridor, trying to be even smaller and less conspicuous if that were possible. The divination teacher had sent her to the Deputy Headmaster's office for lying.

But she hadn't lied. Yes, she was a metamorph. Fabulous, but she had also just turned eleven. She'd been only ten when she arrived at Hogwarts, by special permission. She had celebrated her eleventh birthday just a couple days ago. She was the youngest student currently in the school, and the smallest. She didn't have the control of her metamorphing to be able to give herself perfectly executed house elf ears--the ones she was trying to hide with the hood of her school robe. No, that had happened when some older students had apparently thought it would be a lovely prank to take advantage of her tiny size and turn her into a house elf by slipping some sort of potion into her pumpkin juice at lunch, causing her to now have the same large triangular ears that the house elves had. If she had given herself those ears, they surely would not have been as accurate as these big flapping elf ears were. She didn't know how to change back something like that. Not a clue.

In another day and time, she might have been really frightened of this Deputy Headmaster fellow, but as it was, she was humiliated and ashamed--and angry. She was angry at a lot these days. She was angry at Pavel Levski--the prat of a man that she had believed was her father, and a man she truly hated and for good reason. She was angry with her mother--for letting her believe that Pavel was her father and not telling her the truth until just mere days before she boarded the train for Hogwarts for the first time. She wasn't, in fact, a Levski at all. She was a Belby. She had just learned days ago that her real father was a tall blonde, rather heroic chap named Marcus Belby. And he was already a hero to her. He was tall and handsome and kind, and, even though he had not found out any earlier than she had, Marcus Belby had immediately stepped up to try to get to know her. And that made him a true hero, as far as she was concerned because he was rescuing her from Pavel, asserting his rights to get to be a proper father to her. Too bad he hadn't been here today to rescue her from the 7th years, or whoever they were, who had slipped her the potion for house elf ears.

She hesitated outside the office of the Deputy Headmaster. She needed a breath to get ahold of herself. She didn't dare go in and rant at him in the way she felt like doing. She was innocent, darn it. Perfect prank to hex oneself? Really? What sort of a ditz was the Divination professor anyway? Who really did that? She read the slip. "Incorrigible metamorphagus behavior." Incorrigible? That sounded like it ought to get her sent back home--to her mother and Pavel. If that was what he thought, she'd run away, she decided. She'd simply find her way out. Small people could slip in and out of any number of places. She knew that first hand. If whoever this Deputy Headmaster was going to send her back to Pavel, she'd run away from all of it.

Breathe, she told herself. Breathe. Don't look like a complete imbecile in front of him. Don't rant. Be calm. She yanked the hood down again and knocked, before she could overthink it one more time.

Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office Empty Re: Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office

Post by James William Wilson Sat Aug 17, 2019 11:23 am

There was a running rumor, ever since his time as a student, that the Headmaster of Hogwarts actually did little to nothing work in the school. Well, during peace time, at leas. Certainly, he had some business to attend to in times of crisis, but it was highly probable that the head of the school really just spoke to the portraits most of the time. No one actually knew whether it was true - the students did not have access to the routine of the Headmaster, and the staff never spoke of it (to be frank, some of then, likewise, had no clue about the Headmaster's routine) - so it remained a mystery.

Upon returning to Hogwarts, Wilson had, after a very turbulent period of his life, accepted an administrative position as a sort of compromise. He wanted to teach, he was a (bloody, he himself would add!) professor, but all of the positions had been filled so, in order to be back at the school, Wilson took an administrative position and some additional teaching jobs. Albeit not completely satisfied, Wilson remembered an old mystery from his student days and cherished the opportunity to actually see, for himself, what the Headmaster actually did.

Ogden was an interesting fellow, very intelligent and talkative, he was a good conversationalist, but the truth of it all was - he did absolutely nothing! Nothing happened around the world and except doing necessary administrative work and holding staff meetings, the Headmaster did absolutely nothing. Appalled, although more by the mere fact than by Ogden himself, Wilson was truly shook by the fact that those rumors were true. He had an idealistic perception of the position and was certain that the Headmaster worked diligently throughout the whole day to keep the school running and functional. It was in fact - a lie. The school practically ran himself and most of the administration was done by the Deputy Headmaster, which soon made Wilson realise why the position had been vacant when he returned. No one was crazy enough to do it. ''Well, I obviously am'', he murmured to himself, lost in his thoughts among the books in his office.

Ogden was absent today. Also yesterday. And until next week. Probably. It was an official absence, officially at least, but Wilson had his suspicions that the Headmaster simply took a leave to rest and travel a bit. So he was left to take care of the whole school. Not that he would mind, but it was the principle itself that got on his nerves. He still had his annoying administrative duties and now he had to take care of every petty organisational thing and every bloody complaint. It was a nuisance. In principle. Deep inside, he liked the responsibility, but he would certainly never admit such a happiness to the world.

This train of thought was interrupted by a knock. Certainly, he thought to himself, the hyenas are here to feast on my flesh. How utterly... unexpected. ''Yes?'', he exclaimed while picking up a book from the shelf. Seven Easy Ways to Deal with Garden Gnomes, by Claudius Pickingtoe. He could not fathom what was worse - the fact that someone actually wrote it, the fact that such a book could be found in the Deputy Headmaster's office (it wasn't Wilson's, that was certain) or that there was a naïve soul who actually thought you could easily deal with garden gnomes. Wilson never had a garden, but he worked with a lot of magical creatures throughout the years and garden gnomes, along with those wretched pixies, were among the biggest nuisances. As he turned, he saw, behind his teashades, a small hooded girl in Hufflepuff robes entering slowly. She was holding a slip in her hand and seemed anxious. Oh great, a slip. How amusing, he rolled his eyes internally. ''Headmaster Ogden is not here at the moment. Can I help you somehow?'', he asked, rather bluntly, observing the child.

She looked up at the man in front of her. She wasn't sure what to make of him. He seemed different. She had expected him to start ranting at her just for showing up with a slip, but he hadn't. He was at least going to hear her out. She noticed he was a man that surrounded himself with books. Well, maybe he wasn't so bad. She loved books, almost all books. She was a bookworm by heart, and wasn't sure exactly why the hat had made her a Hufflepuff and not a Ravenclaw like her real father. Her best guess was that the stupid hat had simply gotten it wrong and put her in the wrong house. Her own books shifted in her hands, and the one in the middle--the one she'd been hiding, slipped out and dropped to the floor. She scrambled quickly to pick it up. It was by a muggle author, and it was one of her favorites--by a man named Tolkien. She tucked it on top of her stack and held it close to her, hoping the Deputy Headmaster wouldn't confiscate it because it was a muggle book. She took a breath before speaking so that she might try to say all of it right.

"The Divination professor," she said quietly, her own effort to pace herself and not simply ramble at him about how frustrated she was. "She sent me here. She thinks I lied to her in class. But I didn't." She paused, not wanting to draw the hood off her head, but she supposed there wasn't a choice.

"I...I've been having trouble because of my size.. The older kids make fun of me. They call me Elf and talk to me like I'm their house elf. They threatened to change my shirt into a pillowcase. But that's not the worst of it. It happened at lunch. Some of the other kids said they saw someone put something in my pumpkin juice. I tried to hide it, but..." She took a deep breath, partly to stop herself from continuing to toss out the facts to him in such a disorganized fashion. They were the facts, but certainly not in anything resembling the right order. They were, at best, endwise. She awkwardly drew off the hood of her robe, feeling the large flapping house elf ears spring out from side to side tauntingly.

"I didn't do this to myself," she said. "I hate them. And even if I had done it, I wouldn't have gotten them right. And now I don't know how to get rid of them. I didn't lie about it either. The professor said I did it to myself for attention. She's a nitwit....Sorry. I didn't mean to say that. Sorry." It was how she felt, though, that any professor who believed such an introverted first year would give herself elf ears just for the heck of it, or even had the capability of it, was a complete nitwit. She just hadn't had any intention of blurting out such a candid opinion to the Deputy Headmaster.

She paused. She hadn't even told him her name. She'd gotten it all backwards. She had intended to be more put together than this.

"Sorry, Sir. I'm Poppy--Poppy Levski," she said, trying to reel in all her frustration and embarrassment. "You can do what you like to me, I know but I swear I didn't do this."

Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office Empty Re: Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office

Post by James William Wilson Sat Aug 17, 2019 3:49 pm

The girl was visibly frightened, which did not bother Wilson that much, as most people were in front of him. In his dark robes, he looked like Death and he had, during all these years, gotten used to being perceived as Death. As the girl began to talk, he drew her attention to the large, empty chair in front of his desk and sat opposite of her. She really was small in size; Wilson had noticed that since the chairs in his office were, for some odd reason, disproportional in size, as if half-giants sat in them at some point. He was a tall man himself, but the size of the chairs was just ridiculous.

As she was stating her case further, Wilson calmly took her slip and read what that Divination nitwit wrote. Divination was, in his humble (or not so humble) opinion, one of the more useless branches of magic and although he saw some entertainment potential in the mystique of reading tea leaves or gazing into oversized crystal balls, he could never comprehend why it was being studied in schools. ''Miss Levski, you did not hear this from me, but in my experience, all Divination professors are complete nitwits'', he smiled and looked at the little girl. ''My name is James Wilson, it is nice to meet you'', he added further.

''Your case is, as it seems, a rather peculiar one. Namely, if you're lying to me now, as my colleague is suggesting, then you're exposing yourself to severe punishment because not only are you mocking the system, but you're also abusing the trust of its staff'', he explained coldly, looking at the slip, giving Poppy only a quick glance above his teashades. ''On the other hand, if you are telling the truth, then we're dealing with a severe case of abuse that needs do be addressed'', he added. He grabbed his wand, let the slip fly and uttered: ''Evanesco''. The paper disappeared into thin air, as Wilson's gentle smile appeared behind the nothingness.

''Fortunately for me, Miss Levski, and possibly unfortunately for you, I know of a quick method to test whether you're telling the truth'', he said, ''or not''. He spoke with a touch of joy in his voice, but to the girl, he still looked, quite probably, frightening.

Wilson stood up from his chair and opened a large cupboard behind his desk. It held a lot of useless papers, some old books and, what was most important now, bottles with potions and a variety of ingredients. He summoned a small cauldron with his hand and placed it on the table. He believed the girl. As far as he knew his magic, and he liked to think he did, the child was supposed to be a Metamorphmagus. It was a very strong breed of magic and a child of her age would certainly have had problems controlling such skills. Creating such a transformation at this age and controlling it so perfectly as she did would require skill the child probably didn't have. So, either the child was an extremely powerful witch, which is less probable because Wilson would've heard of her by now, or she was telling the truth.

''So, Miss Levski, if I deduced correctly, you seem to be a Metamorphmagus?'', he asked, searching for the ingredients. ''Don't be scared, I did not read your mind. Although I can do that, too, but... as I've come to understand from the slip and your little speech, the professor accused you of intentionally 'elfing' your ears and then lying about it, right? Well, as far as I know, only Metamorphagi can do that'', he elaborated on his question.

He then turned to her and came to the desk with two small bottles and some plant-like ingredients. ''You see, Miss Levski, I had a very quirky, but exceptionally skilled mentor in Potions and thanks to him, I know how to brew a couple'', he explained. ''This little concoction will tell us whether you're lying or not'', he added. He prepared it in front of the girl, taking some 10-15 minutes to fill a small glass of yellowish liquid. ''I've heard it tastes like lemon'', he offered it to her. ''Now, drink up and we'll see what happens to those ears of yours'', he said, sitting back in his chair.

She noticed the offered chair and since it was higher than normal, she had to give a little hop to sit in it, and she listened and watched as he spoke and got rid of the slip. He made magic look so easy--utterly effortless and yes even graceful, she noticed straight away, wondering if she'd ever be able to make it look so fluid. She wanted to ask him how he had made it look so smooth but that wasn't what she was here for. Professor Wilson--she locked the name in her head. When he said divination teachers were all nitwits, she couldn't help but but flash a glimpse of a smile at his words.

Testing to see if she told the truth? Now that did sound a little ominous. She was determined, though, to make him see what she was telling him, as scrambled as the facts had been, were the truth. She kept a straight face as he spoke of harsh punishments. Somehow she couldn't imagine professors at Hogwarts doing worse to her than Pavel did whenever he had more than his share of firewhiskey. Threats of severe punishment meant little to her. Professor Wilson surely could be intimidating, but his threats were not. She was sure he was a man not to mess with, and she had no intention of pushing his buttons.

When he opened the cabinet and started to brew something in a cauldron, he had her complete interest. She was focused in on watching what he was doing. She couldn't deny she was a a bit frightened, but on the other hand, she truly was curious about what he was making. Her parents didn't brew potions at home, and this was the first she'd seen it. The only thing she had to compare it to was her mother's cooking in the kitchen. She wasn't sure exactly what he was brewing. She watched as he poured it into a little glass, and then he handed it to her and told her to drink. She looked at him a little surprised he expected her to drink it. This was his test? She rethought his words. He was trying to determine if she were what her family called a metamorph. She realized she had left that bit out of her explanation.

She had been told she had gotten her metamorph business from her real father, not Pavel. So far as she could see, the only thing Pavel could do now was drink and talk about his glory days when he played quidditch. She understood the Belby's were the metamorphs. It was one of those things she had intended to ask her real father about as she got to know him. It occured to her now that perhaps that was why she had never gotten any advice or instruction about her skills. Maybe they just didn't know how to give her any help.

She sniffed the liquid in the glass. It didn't smell unpleasant, didn't really smell like anything. Professor Wilson said it tasted like lemon, and she liked that. She decided to just drink it and get it over with. She drank the potion and decided it tasted more specifically like the woodsy-lemony combination that was lemon verbena, much like lemon verbena teacakes in Italy one summer. At least Professor Wilson's concoction wasn't disgusting. In fact, it wasn't bad at all.

"More like lemon verbena," she told him.

[OOC: Actually, I didn't want to use Veritaserum. That would be too easy and - well - illegal xD It's a concoction that eliminates Potion effects, an antidote of sorts, but wouldn't do anything against a Metamorphmagus and since Wilson didn't tell Poppy what sort of potion it was, she wouldn't know what to do with her ears really, so Wilson can see whether she's faking or not]

''Really? Hm, I never actually drank it, there was never any need, but it's supposed to taste like that'', Wilson replied and shrugged his arms. ''You needn't be afraid, Miss Levski. It's not Veritaserum. I suppose you know what Veritaserum is?'', he asked, glaring at her.

He then summoned an hourglass with his hand, letting it flow slowly through the air and rotate constantly as it did. He supposed the little girl would find that amusing, such small tricks amused children. He never had any but he was a child once (he would suppose it was a very long time ago) and he met children before. He usually looked at them like they were pieces in an art gallery - observe, but don't touch - but he knew something about them. He was a good pedagogue, but he wasn't sure he would ever be cut out for a father.

He set the hourglass on the desk, between them. The bright red sand started flowing. ''It is set at seven minutes. The effects of this potion should be visible by then'', he explained. ''This is a very specific Hourglass, Miss Levski. It's called a Mensium. It was crafted by the old wizards in Medieval Italy and it functions so that the sand, despite it's size and quantity, flows at the exact same pace you want it to flow. It's like a Muggle time counter, actually, only more... elegant'', he elaborated. ''This is a very special Mensium, as you can see by the design. It was crafted in France and there are, supposedly, only five of these in the whole world. The red sand you see in it is not coloured, it's authentic. It is magical red sand, supposedly conjured by Godric Gryffindor ages ago. It is, as the story goes, the same sand present in the Great Hall, that counts the house points for the House Cup. Each of the four founders conjured their own magical sand - yellow for Hufflepuff, green for Slytherin, blue for Ravenclaw and red for Gryffindor - and a famous artefact maker from France took portions of the sand and crafted five Mensia for each of the four houses. They are very rare and very valuable. I stumbled across this one while travelling around Europe not so long ago and I got it in a game of chess. It was a very peculiar game of chess. But then again, most of Sweden is'', he explained finally, to pass the time. ''It is said that you cannot take it from the owner by force. It has to be given to you. Otherwise, it's just a fancy paperweight'', he finished.

''Why would these boys to something like this to you? I mean, the students play pranks on each other, that's quite usual, but this is outright bullying. Why did you not talk to someone about it? Ted Lupin is your Head of House, no? Why did you not fight back?'', Wilson asked finally, observing the girl and the hourglass. ''Again, do not worry, what you just drank is not Veritaserum so you are not obliged to tell the truth. As a Legilimens, it would be easier for me to just enter your mind and see the truth myself, but I won't be doing that either. Do you even know what Occlumency and Legilimency are, Miss Levski?'', he inquired with a smile, leaning back in his chair, connecting the tips of his fingers and observing the little girl through his teashades.

The hourglass was almost done.

Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office Empty Re: Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office

Post by Poppy Levski Sun Aug 18, 2019 2:25 pm

Poppy had been reading some of her books a little ahead of schedule, enough to have read a bit of some of the basic definitions, and she had had just a thimbleful of Latin, enough to be able to put together the basic definition for Veritaserum. Veritas meant truth, so it made sense that veritaserum was a truth potion. She nodded when Professor Wilson had asked her if she knew what it was.

The hourglass floated and rotated, and she watched it, mesmerized by the control he had of the fragile timepiece in midair. She supposed she would have merely sent if crashing to the floor if she had tried it. She had a million questions racing in her head, but most of them revolved around a very basic "How-did-you-do-that." She knew it was levitation, but she was curious about the precise steps to make something like that happen. She had managed the feather in levitation class, but this was something more. This was amazing.

She listened to his tale about the Mensium and Godric Gryffindor. Whatever tale there was about that particular founder always made him sound so brave. She had yet to hear any tales about Helga Hufflepuff doing any great feats of bravery. Still, she had to have been good for something, right? Or else, she would not have been one of the founding witches and wizards that had made up Hogwarts.

Professor Wilson asked her about Professor Lupin. Yes, he was her head of house. Why hadn't she told him? It was an excellent question, but at the time, she hadn't thought of telling Lupin, really. Why hadn't she fought back? She had been too embarrassed. She had run from the Great Hall and hidden. Wilson asked her if she knew what Occlumency and Legilimency were. She shook her head because she didn't have a clue.

"I...I could have maybe told Professor Lupin," she said, feeling foolish for not telling him. "I didn't think of it. People were laughing at me, so I just ran. I ran and hid in the girl's bathroom until I realized I was going to be late for class, so..." As she was speaking, she felt a warmth to her ears, and she laid her hands on her ears to feel that the enormous elf ears were gone.

"They're gone!" she exclaimed. "Thank you! Thank you. I didn't know how to get them back. I'm not good at getting things back right again once I change them. My mum could sometimes put it right again, not always." She remembered being taken a couple of times to St. Mungos to be put right again, to a healer she only knew as Robert who had put her back to rights both times.

"If I can't learn to put it back, then I don't want to be a metamorph anymore. Is there any way to turn it off? Robert's a nice man, I suppose, but I don't want to have to go see him every time I buggar something up." Well, there she was again, talking to Professor Wilson endwise. She sighed. She really did need to learn to order her thoughts when she talked to the professors here.

Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office Empty Re: Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office

Post by James William Wilson Mon Aug 19, 2019 12:45 am

Wilson smiled as the hourglass finished its short path and then It was a rare occasion to see him smile, but he took the liberty with the pupils from time to time. He smiled because he made a child happy, but he also smiled because that particular child was telling the truth. ''See, I told you, it was nothing to be afraid of'', he said as he stood up and returned all the ingredients to the cupboard. ''I am no Potions Master, but this is a useful little trick. It's a sort of generalised antidote, so to speak. It annuls the effects of weaker potions and it's fairly useful when dealing with problems such as yours, namely - pranks. You won't learn it here at Hogwarts, but every Potions Master knows it'', he elaborated. ''If you had conjured the ears yourself, it would have been completely useless and they wouldn't have disappeared. Seeing that they have, I now know what we are dealing with'', he said.

He returned back to his chair and levitated the Mensium back to its place, playing with it, once more, using his fingers. Wandless and non-verbal magic were one of the most practical skills available to wizarding kind and Wilson remembered when he first saw a demonstration of those skills during his third year. It was in one Charms class, when Flitwick demonstrated how to use some easier charms with more ease. Wilson was amazed at the practicality of these skills and he vowed to himself he would learn them as soon as possible. It was not an easy task, non-verbal and, especially, wandless magic require enormous knowledge and power, but after years of training he could now impress small children in his office. That made him proud.

''I am sure professor Lupin would have provided you with adequate assistance, Miss Levski, but I don't mind you coming here. My door is always open to those who need assistance, an important thing I learned from my late Headmaster, professor Albus Dumbledore. I presume you're not familiar with the name. He was, without question, the greatest wizard of his generation. Extremely powerful, but even more wise. One could really learn a couple of things by listening to him'', he elaborated, feeling a surge of nostalgia. He composed himself quickly. ''Your mother works as a healer or? I do not think I know her. She wasn't my student at one point? I mean, based on your age, she could be rather young'', he said, pensively, ''Did you visit St. Mungo's often because of your inability to control your skills?''

He then heard a familiar name. Robert. A healer. It must have been him. ''That Robert fellow you mentioned, he's not by any chance Robert Lupin? Now, that would be a familiar name. If you had him helping you, I am certain you had the best care possible'', he said, thinking how nice it would be to greet an old friend. It was a time for reunions, so why not start off with Robert Lupin. ''Oh, and yes, Occlumency and Legilimency are two very useful, but also very advanced forms of magic that allow you to pick someone's mind and protect your own. Basically, a Legilimens can enter another person's mind and explore it, but only if the other person is not a skilled Occlumens, which is the art of defending your mind against intrusions. Some people manage to master only one, some people none, and the rarest breed of witches and wizards manages to master both. You are still far too young to burden yourself with the practicalities, as it is a very difficult learning process, but it's better you know what they are, even if you don't learn them just yet'', he finished with his elaborations.

''Now, Miss Levski, what happened to you is an intolerable offence and breach of school rules. If Headmaster Odgen were here, they would probably be sanctioned, but since he isn't, I might suggest another approach to the issue. First of all, you shall give me their names, as I presume you know who did this to you. A formal sanction must follow, but let me worry about that. What I am afraid is that you might be, at some point, victimised again and that would be horrible. You need to defend yourself. You need to learn that. Tell me, how versed are you in defensive magic?'', he asked finally.

She sighed with relief--relief at having her own ears back and relief that Wilson believed her with certainty now. She was starting to believe she would be spared whatever consequence the divination teacher might be envisioning for her.

Perhaps Wilson was right that Professor Lupin might have helped her. She hadn't had occasion yet to talk to him aside from Transfiguration class. He seemed nice enough, she supposed. Wilson mentioned learning things from Dumbledore. She did have a vague knowledge of Dumbledore.

"I know Dumbledore," she said. "Sort of. I've got 9 Dumbledore chocolate frog cards. My brother trades with me because I keep getting some foul tempered old woman named Black--Walburga Black--whoever she was. My brother thinks she's funny, so he likes getting lots of her cards."

When Wilson asked her if her mother was a healer, she shook her head. "My mum?" she asked dubiously. "Nah. She's no good at healing spells. She got out some old dusty book and looked up a spell and tried it. It worked a few times, but just as often as not, she made it worse. She works in the Ministry as a solicitor of some sort and she's absolutely no help in teaching me how to get anything about morphing right. Nobody at home is of any help. My real dad can morph, though. He said he'll help me, but I've only just met him. You might know him--I don't know. His name is Marcus Belby, and he works for Robert as a bodyguard for somebody in Robert's family. Robert's nice enough, but I see him far more than I like because sometimes I morph even when I don't intend to. I don't even need to go through the emergency ward anymore. They just let me go upstairs to his office up on the fifth floor whenever I need him. He's started keeping a jar of ice mice in his office for when I come--they're his favorites, but he shares them with me when I come. He even gave me a rainbow colored pygmy puff for my birthday. His wife got some rainbow ones by accident in this last batch she raised, and he gave me one. Mum won't let me bring it unless I get permission to have it here."

She listened as he told her about Occlumency and Legilimens. She frowned at hearing what they were used for. She wasn't sure she wanted to learn either of those spells.

"Those spells sound a lot like rooting around in someone else's knickers. Sounds cheeky to me," she said. "I don't know if I'd like it." And then he asked her about who had tainted her pumpkin juice. She sighed heavily. She hadn't considered she might be asked who did it, and it made her nervous. What if they came after her again, and worse, for telling? Did she really want to tell that to Professor Wilson?

"We've just started reading about the first spell, Expelliarmus," she told him, trying to avoid giving up the precise name of the girl who, she had been told, had spoiled her drink. "We haven't tried it yet. I know how to levitate feathers, but I think, if she tried it again, she's be too heavy for me to levitate. And then I'd still have to decide what to do with her if I could levitate her. I wish I could do magic like you. You make it all look so easy. Maybe I could brew a potion that would make her just go away, but they'd never get rid of a quidditch captain anyway, and she's the most popular of them all." She realized she'd all but spit out the name by telling him she was the favored quidditch captain. "Buggar," she said, frustrated with herself now and dreading what Jack Dyllan would do about it. "Now I've done it. I've really put my foot in it now."

Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office Empty Re: Sent to the Deputy Headmaster's Office

Wilson smiled as the young girl mentioned Dumbledore, or, rather, when she mentioned how she knew Dumbledore. It was a long time since he ate a chocolate frog. He missed the taste. Not that he disliked chocolate, but he grew out of it. Maybe I should buy some. Who knows, maybe I don't have to be all grown up, he thought. ''Professor Dumbledore, as we all called him, was... he was someone whom this period could use very much. His wisdom would have been and still would be of much use to many of us. But, sadly, we have to do it without him. We have to manage'', Wilson commented, finishing his rather melancholic speech with a friendly smile. He just hoped he didn't come off as creepy, because he usually would when smiling. ''And Walburga Black... that's a name I haven't heard in a while. I did not meet the woman, it was even before my time, but I've had the... no, not pleasure, certainly... to meet her portrait back in the Black family home. I wouldn't want her in my card collection, tell that to your brother. I think it's because of people like her that Muggles use the term 'witch' or 'hag' in a pejorative context'', he commented finally.

As she told him about her life story, he, firstly, deduced that it was a very complicated affair, and, secondly, he noticed some familiar names pop up. Robert Lupin seemed to be an often-seen person in Poppy's life and that was not such a queer thing once he found out her ''real dad'' was Marcus Belby. He was never that well-acquainted with Belby, but they have met and he was a man who could be trusted. He had no clue about his private life, but the fact that Poppy Levski was his illegitimate daughter didn't all that surprise him. Belby was a handsome man and although he did not know what Poppy's mother looked like, if the child was anything like her (and she certainly didn't take anything from Belby), she was also beautiful. Belby probably fell for her and she fell for his charm. The only question, as far as Wilson was concerned, is why they were not together and why was Poppy Levski carrying another man's name. ''I... know who Marcus Belby is. Him and I, we were invloved in a lot of perilous situations not so long ago. You were still a child back then and that's good, but someone had to secure all of this for you'', he pointed at his office, symbolising the school and the peace. ''Your father, your real father and I helped secure that. Among others. He's a brave man, Marcus Belby... you should be proud'', he said, threading carefully as to not upset the girl. ''Yes, Robert Lupin is a true gentleman and a great person to know. How you described him... it's the Robert Lupin I know'', Wilson added and then stopped at the matter of her pet. ''Your pet? Well, let's settle that, shall we?'', Wilson said and summoned a piece of parchment and a quill. He quickly scribbled a note and signed it, handing it over to the girl. ''This is a note from the Deputy Headmaster, allowing you to bring your pet within the school walls. I don't think your mother would want anything more. Don't lose it'', he said.

''Yes... that is a rather simplistic view on Occlumency and Legilimency, but not far from the truth. Legilimency is dangerous when in the wrong pair of hands, which is why Occlumency is sometimes necessary. You would need to learn how to protect yourself from intrusions, but not yet. You're still too young for that, thankfully'', he said calmly and then awaited her answer to his last question.

He heard her out, calmly. She was frightened, that much was obvious. She did not reveal the name to him, but he knew whom she was walking about. Interesting, he had heard her name a couple of times before, during staff meetings, but he never thought she'd go so low as to prank a child this small. ''No need to worry, Miss Levski'', he finally said, wanting to calm her down. His voice was solemn and very fatherly. ''As far as I am concerned, you've told me nothing. And as far as Miss Dyllan is concerned, I shall take care of that matter myself'', he smiled. But, he was right - she needed protection. She was young, she was vulnerable and she was exposed. Not that such a prank was something truly dangerous, but it was a matter of principle. ''It is very difficult to levitate a person, especially at your age. But, there are some other spells you could use to kick someone out of their shoes'', he said taking his wand and whispering Ascendio. ''For example, people usually think the Ascension Spell can only lift its caster above the ground, but as you can see, you are now floating above your chair'', he explained as he slowly levitated the girl around the room a bit, before returning her back to her place. ''Magic is truly magical, as the Muggles would say. I only realised that quite late on. But, yes, certainly, there is much to be learned. You need to learn how to protect yourself. I do know you have your DADA professor and I do not doubt her credentials, but I also know my own. You need to be taught things in order to protect yourself. And I can teach you. It's not like I actually have much practical work with the students anymore. It's mostly paperwork since the Headmaster's often absent. So, what I am saying is, would you like me to teach you how to defend yourself?'', he asked finally, with a warm smile. Well, as warm as he could conjure.
