Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Oddball In The Owlery Empty Oddball In The Owlery

Post by Guest Thu Jun 06, 2013 2:20 pm

Mavis was sat in the middle of the owlery floor amongst bird droppings and straw. The owls around her turned their orange eyes upon her, blinked, then turned away. The only owl that didn't think bad of Mavis was her tawny owl Dusty. He was old and withered and her Mum had bought him on the cheap. Unfortunately Mavis was the daughter of a Muggle greengrocer and a witch greengrocer - meaning the magical talent running through Mavis was almost squib-like.

As Mavis stroked the bird besides her a few owls swooped in with a splat of bird poo. The gormless Gryffindor, However, didn't noticed she'd been showered in bird poop, staining her robes. Not that she would have cared, Mavis' robes were always a state.

Oddball In The Owlery Empty Re: Oddball In The Owlery

Kyria decided it would be a good day to check the owlery for a family message maybe. Her cat Kota decided to tag along with her as well. Other than checking for a letter, Kyria liked the owls. She had quite the fondness for animals and she enjoyed watching the owls fly in and out. Just had to watch out for bird droppings. Though kyria could care less what happens to her, she didn't really quite like the idea of getting droppings on her. It would be really obvious until it gets washed off.

Kyria climbed up the tower to see another girl, from behind looking to be a little older than her, sitting in the middle of the owlery. She also seemed to be covered in a lot of bird droppings. Kyria stifled a giggle. "At least the birds took care of their business before i got here." She thought and then decided it be best to not tease people in her mind, especially since she didn't recognize who it was at first. Kyria snuck up a little to get a better look of the girl. then it hit her.

"Uhmm You're Mavis Oakes right?" Kyria said with a smile, recognizing her Gryffindor classmate. She did look very familiar now, having seen her in the common room and maybe hearing a person say her name aloud. Kyria couldn't help but hear since she was in the room and whoever said it was talking rather loudly. She knelt down beside Mavis, still smiling as she waited for her to confirm her name.

Mavis lifted her head at the sound of footsteps. A younger girl had entered the owlery and it appeared to be a fellow Gryffindor. 'Hi!' Mavis gasped in excitement upon meeting a new friend who had taken the pleasure to sit besides her on the untidy floor. Mavis had taken her shoes off and was wiggling her tiny toes as she showed each one of her dirty teeth - being an unforgetful so and so Mavis often needed reminding to brush her teeth, however most students found it rather rude to point this out so they got more manky by the minute.

'Yes I'm Mavis! WOW! I feel famous!' Mavis screamed before falling to her back letting out a hefty chuckle, scaring a few owls from their post. Dusty, her own old, was used to Mavis' odd quirks - even he secretly thought of her as Oddball Oakes - but she was a nice girl with a kind heart. 'What's your name?' The Gryffindor asked eagerly as she caught her breath back from the sudden laughter that had erupted from her like a fog horn.

Kyria giggled sweetly at Mavis's enthusiasm. She sat comfortably down next to Mavis Indian-style. With MAvis's reactions he was most definitely a people person and Kyria liked that. She like dpeople who were easy to get along with and were open-minded. it always made her feel secure, even though she may not show any insecurity whatsoever.

'What's your name?' Kyria heard her say, realizing she hadn't introduced herself. Since she had slowly started making friends since last year Mavis probably never heard of her yet. "Oh of course! I'm Kyria Lyris. It's a pleasure to met you!" She introduced with a smile. "Do you come here often?" Kyria knew she herself didn't come often, mostly because her father doesn't like the idea of using an owl for the fear her stepmother would find out. They didn't want word of her coming out. It was her father's fault though for marrying a blabber mouth.

Oddball In The Owlery Empty Re: Oddball In The Owlery

'Wow what a cool name!' Mavis cried at how well the younger Gryffindor seemed to be responding to her, she was much friendlier than the rest of the school. Three students had already entered the owlery then randomly turned around at the sight of Mavis.

'I'm always here!' Mavis lied, not realising that she was in fact lying. To Mavis she was everywhere all the time and often forgot that she'd been to other places besides the one she was in... Although it was kind of true, Mavis went everywhere at the chance of meeting a friend. 'I spend a lot of time in the kitchens too! I'm friends with all the house elves.' Mavis explained, unaware if Kyria would know house elves were at Hogwarts. 'Oh and I like the care of magical creatures paddock and the lake. Oooo! I also end up in the hospital wing a lot but I don't choose to go there, things just, kinda happen!' Mavis continued not phased at the fact she was always injured, in fact she rather enjoyed getting to know the matron on a first name basis - much to the nurses' displeasure seeing as Oddball Oakes was her nickname among the staff as well as students.

"Thanks," Kyria giggled at Mavis's enthusiastic compliment. indeed it was a unique Grecian name, mostly because her father was Greek and her mother had grown to take an interest in Greek creatures and magic. Kyria listened politely as Mavis spoke to her of the places she goes to besides the owlery, which she apparently went to all the time. Kyria wasn't sure if that were true but who was she to say whether Mavis was lying or not? She didn't know Mavis all that well. The fact Mavis mentioned that she was always in the hospital wing gave kyria th impression that Mavis was one to always be about, maybe sometimes as restless as herself ... or maybe it was clumsiness. Whatever the reason Kyria felt she would never be bored around Mavis and smiled.

"I love the magical creatures paddocks! And I didn't know we could ever visit the house elves down in the kitchens. I've never met a house elf before what are they like?" Kyria asked, clearly interested at the mention of house elves. She never knew there was someone else with an interest in magical creatures, or at least someone who had the same fascination as she did. This proved to Kyria she didn't make as many friends or knew too many people around her than she thought or even had any close friends that Kyria shared interests with. She should run into people more often.

Oddball In The Owlery Empty Re: Oddball In The Owlery

Mavis' mouth dropped wide open when Kyria mentioned that she wasn't even aware of the house elves. Admittedly it had taken Mavis a few moths before she'd stumbled across them as a first year anxious for food one Saturday afternoon. Ever since she had found the house elves the Gryffindor had never wanted to leave the kitchens, she'd made friends with the elves and had treated them like equals and, for once, the house elves didn't look at her as though she were an oddball they too treated her respectfully.

'Yeah you should come and see them! There are HUNDREDS!' Mavis gasped stretching her arms wide expressively before animatedly telling Kyria about the different house elves. 'There is Bonsi who, oh he is my BEST friend! He's the cool one who wears the uniform back to front to make a statement. He can talk for England and is pretty funky in her y'ano umm personality! Then you've got Dumpy, Farquar, Simber, Tally, Fungus, Sludge, Maisy - oh she's pretty - Frosty, Bangor and, well there are HUNDREDS, but they are the ones in my group!' Mavis cried in excitement as she continued to pay Dusty her owl, before her expression turned sad.

'Then there is Winky. Bless her, she is an alcy and has never got over her master freeing her. But he sounded kinda mean if you ask me!' Mavis added, whispering behind a raised hand as she spoke about the late Barty Crouches aged house elf addicted to firewhiskey. There was no need to whisper though, they were alone - along with the owls of course.

Kyria felt slightly embarrassed with Mavis's reaction. it made Kyria feel like she should've known this all along. Kyria hadn't ever thought about venturing off in the kitchens, and now she wondered why the thought never occurred to her before.

Kyria started to feel at ease again however when Mavis told her about the house elves she knew. Again Kyria liked the girl's enthusiasm, it kind of made Kyria feel in high spirits too. In no time, Kyria was smiling at the idea of seeing the house elves. But then she heard about Winky.

"Oh my that's terrible," Kyria said, "The poor thing," She leaned in when Mavis whispered "Who was her master?" She asked since she knew nothing about the house elves or their former masters.

Mavis nodded in agreement. 'Yeah yeah it is! Yeah!' Running four chubby fingers and a thumb through her shoulder length hair, scratching her scalp as she did so. 'Some man who was, umm, like he was some famous meanie who was, umm, like someone in the Ministry? He wasn't nice.. WAIT!' A sudden idea had struck Mavis, something that wasn't common in the mind of Mavis - the girl who is as dim as a dishwater.

'COME WITH ME! I Can show you all the elves!' Mavis cried, leaping up from the ground, causing her owl Dusty to flutter away in fright as she Oddball Oakes collapsed back to the ground due to being off balance. 'Look at that! It's as if they're dragging me down.' Mavis gasped before erupting into the same snort-hazard laugh from her earlier, her hands and feet waving around giving the impression she was an overturned beetle.

Kyria fingered her chin, thinking for a minute who in the ministry could be cruel to their house elves. The first to come to mind was Lucius Malfoy, but if she recalled correctly, his house elf was called Dobby. Kyria thought harder into the history of the Ministry. Could it be....?

Kyria's thoughts were disrupted when Mavis cried out, shocking Kyria for a moment. She almost had it, who the owner may have been, but now all thoughts of that were dispelled. Kyria smiled, happy that Mavis was going to take her to see the elves. As she started to stand, Kyria looked at Mavis surprised to see her flailing on her back . Kyria laughed as she got up and took Mavis's hand, pulling her up.

"Are you alright?" Kyria asked concerned... and starting to walk out and down the steps of the owlery.
