Re: Things Left Unsaid

Stephen kept his head low not sure of what to expect. As professor Thorfinn mentioned the letter he glanced at it on the table wondering what was it so important for them to write the headmaster directly and not him. And from them he though it was his mother; his father barely said a word to him and even less would he waste his time writing anything. Not even the authorisation for Hogsmead has ever been signed for what weekends when students were allowed to it had only been a bore.

He looked up at the professor though. "An accident?" the boy's eyes showed nothing but concern and even a bit of fear. His mother has been in an accident...? He couldn't help remembering the last time they were together at King's Cross. Ever since then there were no news coming from home and now... all of the sudden... "H-how...? What?" he seemed lost in his own words as he tried to process that information. "What happened?"

Selwyn was glad he'd had the boy sit down. He might have fallen down, if not.

"It doesn't say," he replied.

And that had been weird.

"It's a very odd letter, actually," Selwyn said. "That's why I'll floo to St Mungo's with you, if you decide to go."

Suddenly was hard to keep track of one simple train of thought. He had questions, he had fears but more than he couldn't really voice any of them. It was like he had unlearnt everything he knew...

"I can go visit her?" he asked but it was not a question for permission; it was more of thinking out loud as if he was still processing.

The kid sounded a little bit stunned. Selwyn would be lying if he said that was a total surprise.

It had been a weird letter. If he was being generous, he could put it down to shock. Overly formal, the way it referred to Stephen's mother wanting to see him, where Selwyn knew he'd have written "we". Proper preparations would be arranged. What was he supposed to make of that?

But the more he saw of Stephen's reaction, the less Selwyn wanted to be generous. Besides, this accident sounded like it had happened some time ago. Long enough for them to ensure his mother was stable (and that was callous, too). Long enough for the man not to be in shock.

He said nothing. He dearly wanted to know what Stephen's relationship was like with his father, but he couldn't ask the kid. He'd have to see for himself. In the meantime, let him compose himself.

Stephen took a deep breath in a way to calm himself down; to let that feeling in the bottom of his chest go away. Gosh, it was excruciating. But how was one to take something like this? "When can I go?" he asked not really understanding the headmaster's plans of coming along.

"We can leave now, if you'd like," Selwyn said, standing. "I'll explain matters to your other teachers when we get back."

If "we" came back. Selwyn wouldn't have been entirely surprised if Stephen's parents decided they wanted to keep him home after this. There was something going on there, but Selwyn wasn't sure what. For a moment, he wished he had time to get Shylock's opinion of all this.

He wished he could get anyone's opinion of anything. The school was in a state, now that Hayes had left.
