Ackerman, Paul

on Sun Jun 18, 2017 5:27 pm

MAIN
They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense

Character's Legal Name: Paul Elias Ackerman

    Age: 30.

    Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw grad

    Blood Type:  Halfblood

    Species: Human

    Face claim: Jude Law

APPEARANCE
...Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel - Harry often said that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig

Give a general description of your character's appearance. Consider what they look physically look like and what their fashion style is. How would we pick your character out in a crowded room?

He's not ever going to plan to be the first one you pick out in a crowded room because he doesn't want to be the person you notice in a crowded room. He only is aiming to be "a regular chap." If you find you must look for him Paul is 6'0, blonde, and green eyed, average weight, with a toned build. He refuses to be ostentatious, and generally only buys classically styled clothing and accessories, so long as they fit well. He generally only wears his hair short cropped, but his preferences for facial hair vary and tend to be more impetuous.

PERSONALITY
......If only the hat had mentioned a house for people who felt a bit queasy, that would have been the one for him

Tell us about your character's overall personality.  How do they act on a usual day? Remember, no personality quiz results, and no copy & pasting; it must be in your own words.

He hates social gatherings of any sort and generally avoids them, even at the risk of making excuses to dodge them. He's introverted, but he can, on occasion, muster up a bit of a performance to look the contrary. Because he does not take relationships of any kind lightly, he prefers to try to cultivate deeper, committed, long lasting relationships, rather than any sort of fleeting friendships or romances. He's candid, usually unpretentious, intellectual, and curious. He's an insatiable bookworm of wide tastes, with a love of mental challenges--including clockmaking, jewelry design, alchemy, wandmaking, puzzle solving, etc. If there is one thing Paul hates, it is sheer boredom and he's happiest when he's tinkering on some minute little project, making a pocketwatch or some magical gizmo. Some of the shelves in his flat display part of his collections of victorian clockwork toys, old alchemy books and mystical things. He also has a collection of pocketwatches that are usually tucked away but ever-growing.  He has a beginning of what he thinks will perhaps become a cookbook collection too, and he's finding his travels have opened his eyes and broadened his palate. He's learned to do his own cooking, and he feels life is good for now, for the most part, in every way but one. He still misses the companionship of a laid back kind of dog.

HISTORY
..................Hey! My eyes aren't 'glistening with the ghosts of my past'!

Early Years: Father--Stanley Ackerman (former Ravenclaw)--age 56--works growing herbs at a potions ingredient supply house
Mother--Hope (Stidwell) Ackerman (former Hufflepuff) --age 54--homemaker, also provides home daycare services for working witches and wizards.
Sybil Ackerman Howell (former Hufflepuff)--28--nurse at St. Mungos
Eldon Ackerman  (former Gryffindor)--age 25--currently studying dragons in Romania
Simon Ackerman  (former Ravenclaw)--age 25--clerk at the Ministry of Magic

Stanley and Hope Ackerman still live in the same somewhat small country cottage on the outskirts of a very small village. Paul remembers of it being a remote place that removed him from having playmates his own age for the most part. He and his siblings were different enough to not be frequent playmates for each other unless inclement weather kept them indoors. Paul preferred to play outside, and part of the reason was the personality of his father.

Stanley Ackerman is constantly anxious and fidgets so excessively that it makes his life (and his family's life) difficult. He becomes, at times, short tempered. Hope Ackerman is a loving, peaceful woman who is a caretaker by nature, and she loves children and seems to have a natural knack for caring for them, which led her to babysitting for working wizards and witches, with the provision that the children had to be picked up by their parents before Stanley got home. Paul learned early that he had to also be "seen and not heard" when his father was home.

Paul's maternal grandparents owned a nearby farm, and it was to their farm that Paul usually went when he went outside because there was always something to do. He had a great love for his grandparent's border collie (named Snap) and particularly for his grandfather (who worked as a wizarding jeweler as a secondary job to working the farm). If Paul had a playmate, it was generally Snap. If Paul would have had to cite who the greatest man in his life had been, unfortunately, it would not have been Stanley, who avoided coming home from work because of his own intolerance of children. Paul's mentor in a great many things has been his grandfather. They have always been close, and his grandfather seemed to just pick up the slack that Stanley so willingly left behind.

When Paul was seven, his grandfather picked up a junked old coaster brake bike and made it a project for the two of them to refinish, paint it, replace the chain, rebuild the brake system, and make it ready to ride again. They painted it to look like a night sky, and Paul spent hours meticulously painting on tiny flecks of light with luminous paint to make it shimmer at night like real stars. It was that kind of detail that Paul would grow to enjoy and would lead him into his life's work.

It was the same grandfather who also inspired Paul to have a love in clocks and jewelry. Paul loved to tag along to the shop his grandfather worked at, and Paul acquired a love of working with the spare parts to see if he could build anything with them. His grandfather would come across junked clocks, and he gave them and boxes of mishmashed clock and jewelry parts to Paul. That led to Paul learning his clock making and jewelry making skills.

Hogwarts Years:The family ever expected any less than Paul's Hogwart's letter, and it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that he would be a Ravenclaw like his father. Paul wasn't necessarily happy about the thought of being a Ravenclaw merely because his father had been one. He needed to know that his placement in any house was based on his own personality. He did not want to any of his father's footsteps, but his head of house quickly saw the hat had, as ever, been correct. Young Paul was elated at the mammoth Hogwarts library, and it seemed to open wide a insatiable hunger for learning. Paul often opted out of other things to be in the library so he could study something, many things that were not on the Hogwart's curriculum.

Paul's studies generally received high marks, and that also helped open doors to friendships within members of his own house. Their personalities were common enough that his handful of mates became steadfast friends.
.As soon as I was old enough I worked at Ollivanders and, during the summers, I also worked part time for an eccentric old wizard who dabbled in alchemy. That gave me something else to read up on in my leisure at Hogwarts. It seemed to me to be a natural fit with my tinkering and the wandmaking.

Paul worked, as an apprentice, at Ollivanders, learning wandmaking skills. It wasn't the watch and jewelry making Paul liked, but Ollivanders appreciated his artistry, his desire for meticulous work, and his eagerness to lean how to fashion a wand with precision that could, if needed, also look like a beautiful piece of art. He admired the craftsmanship he found in the Ollivander family, and he became close with the people he worked with there and, fueled by their support, he decided he wanted to learn more of wandmaking--whatever there was yet to know, partly to repay them for their kindness to him for so many year. It was important to Paul to make the Ollivander family proud.

It also opened the door for him to get more pieces and parts, in addition to the clock and jewelry scraps he got from his grandfather. Paul used some of them to make a clockwork beetle that could walk and fly, and he used it to prank some of his housemates. His friends were so fascinated with the beetle that they were soon paying him to fashion some sort of a clockwork bug for them as well. It was a handy way for him to earn a little extra cash from time to time.

After Hogwarts: The idea of leaving Hogwarts was a sad thing for Paul. He had made a home for himself there where he felt safe and included more than he had been when he was living at home. Besides, there was the magnificent library that he did not know if he could pull himself away from. It was the school librarian that suggested he not consider his learning experiences to be over by suggesting he travel to learn from those who were studying the wand making and alchemy skills Paul wanted to hone. Seeking out advice from professors, from the Ollivanders, and from his grandfather, Paul took the years in between his Hogwarts' graduation and the present to travel and study. Paul's interests in clockwork and jewelry took him into the European continent, and he found wand making and alchemy skills there that he did not anticipate he would find. He settled there and lived for a time before moving on to India and finally China. He found masters of ancient alchemy there that opened yet another school of thought and added to what he knew It was in China that he began to learn about the possibility of alchemy being used to make weaponry. That made him settle there to study gunpowder, explosives, and how to influence weaponry with magic and alchemy.

Paul had remained in correspondence with his mother and his grandfather during his Hogwarts years and during his travels.  According to letters from his grandfather, Paul learned that Ollivanders had fallen a bit from the fine shop that Paul remembered working in. His grandfather wondered if the shop had fallen on hard times. It was a sad thought for Paul, who had always had such a love for Ollivander and all the warm memories he had for Diagon Alley. His grandfather made a suggestion that Paul consider buying the famed wand shop to try to make a go of it for himself.  It was as frightening a challenge as it was intriguing. When his grandfather offered to become a financial backer to make the venture possible for him, Paul could not refuse. He looks forward to trying to buy the shop and open it with the same sort of personalized, custom service that the place had given the wizarding community for so many generations.

Paul gathered his things and his large barn owl, Ghost, and moved to London. He made a home for himself in the flat above the shop.
