YORKE, Arthur

on Wed Jan 25, 2017 5:39 am

MAIN
They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense

Character's Legal Name: Arthur Aaron Yorke

   Age: 23

   Hogwarts House: Slytherin

   Blood Type:  Halfblood

   Species: Vampire (previously a half-vampire)

   Face claim: Andrew Gower

APPEARANCE
...Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel - Harry often said that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig

Arthur has a bit of an awkward look about him - he isn't what you would call conventionally handsome. But that has never been much of a concern for him. Sometimes it works to his advantage. It's easy to be just another face in the crowd when your face is not exceptional. And, as a vampire, that often does him a lot of good.

That's not to say that he can't look rather intimidating when he wants to. His blue eyes can be a touch unnerving if he stares too long or too pointedly. And his hair, a brown color that sometimes lightens up during rare sunny summers, tends to be a bit messy when he's at home or spending a day on his own. But he is expected to look very put-together and proper whenever he is around his mother and her friends. Still, he often can be caught with a bit of a five-o'clock shadow despite his best efforts. His mother won't let him anywhere near his (nearly) betrothed without looking his best, though. Makes him feel like a child, but he has to give her something.

Of course, he's probably innately off-putting for some, as it is a bit obvious that he's not quite like humans. His complexion is unnaturally pale, and of course the teeth thing is probably wickedly surprising to people who aren't used to him, or used to being around vampires in general. He's also quite thin, as though he has never really eaten food with much substance to it.

PERSONALITY
......If only the hat had mentioned a house for people who felt a bit queasy, that would have been the one for him

Arthur is the quiet, observant type. He may be a bit proud, but only when it comes to his family and his life as a vampire. He expects prejudices and fear and for people to misunderstand him, so he has learned to accommodate and expect it. Not because the wizarding world isn't taught about his kind, but because any other can be seen as a threat depending on how members of that group behave. Even ones entirely unrelated to Arthur himself.

He wants more than life is currently offering him, but his fear is that he always will. What if he marries, has a family, and then finds that it isn't enough? Perhaps that would depend upon the woman, and upon the family, but he just doesn't know. That fear drives him to keep an eye on everything, and probably makes him seem standoffish, but that isn't the intention at all. Rather, he's wary and curious and a bit conflicted most of the time. He knows any decision he makes could be important, given how careful his father clearly thought he was being. Sure, it's a paranoia thing in some cases, but he's actually a great listener most of the time, and has a wonderful memory - particularly for the things people say when they don't have to speak at all. Those moments are fascinating to him, though not in the way one might expect (i.e., that he could use them against the person later). He just is interested in why people are the way they are, mainly because he thinks he knows himself, but even that could be a stretch to claim.

HISTORY
..................Hey! My eyes aren't 'glistening with the ghosts of my past'!

   Early Years:
When Arthur was born, his mother was still a witch. His father had always wanted a son, and to have one with the woman he loved was brilliant. But he did know that she would age much more quickly than he would, and that was not something he was interested in. So he turned her a couple years later, once she agreed. But he swore not to try and turn Arthur until he was out of school, and had started his adult years. She refused to let him be bullied during school, even if he was already a half-vampire.

It was lucky, really, that he lived with both parents rather than with a mother when the vampire had left. He had someone on both sides to help him learn how to deal with what he was, and he also was able to watch his mother learn how to be a full vampire alongside them. It was, bizarrely, a bonding experience for the lot of them. Arthur never really learned how to be any other way. Sure, in school he would have friends and opportunities, but his family was all he considered to be important for, predictably, over a decade.

   Hogwarts Years:
Being sorted into Slytherin was almost irrelevant as far as Arthur was concerned. It was fitting, perhaps, given how much he expected from himself and how much his family expected as well. And he liked most of his housemates, though he tried to avoid the house rivalries. Other houses had students he quite liked as well, so the sorting was as important to him as the education itself.

Arthur never cared much for sports, mainly because he was always a bit too lanky and not a fan of athletics. To this day, he doesn't understand the love people have for Quidditch. But he was in a few clubs over the years, like the dueling and astronomy-based ones. It helped him seek out friends that would be helpful later, and that also had the same sort of drive that he felt. Perhaps that was why classes were his greatest interest. His father's business was in Arithmancy, and his mother was a curse breaker. So he wanted to test the waters and see if it would be possible to do both and please both. Little is ever accomplished by people who do little.

In his later years at Hogwarts, the marriage law rolled around and he watched with mild horror as his head of house was assigned to marry a student his own age. Of course, the irony of that would hit him a few years later. But he was matched with a quiet Ravenclaw who - well, actually. She appeared quiet. But she wasn't, really. She disappeared right before the day of, which was fine by Arthur and his parents - particularly his father, who wanted someone who could match his son in wits and future advantages. Not particularly easy to meet those standards, given Arthur never heard him explained what that even meant. So while that question lingered, he tried to focus on graduation and finding his way.

   After Hogwarts:
He started off trying the code breaker thing, just to try and please his mother. And his father was relatively okay with it, even though he expected Arthur to at least take over the company and lead the people who worked for him. The way it works, you see, is that Mr. Yorke (the senior) would hire various Diviners to make predictions, whether for other companies, the Ministry, or general clients. Whether they were right or not, he rarely cared nor checked. But Arthur found curse breaking rather like a puzzle, and that was a lot of fun. Still, being busy kept him happy, kept him curious. So he agreed to help out part time with his father's company.

It's important to note one thing, however: Arthur's father had always been a bit of a monster, even as vampires come. Arthur himself was a half-vampire until his father turned him after his Hogwarts years, and his mother had been a normal, human witch until being turned. But their father also had a secret.

The Yorkes lived in a small town in Wales, enjoying the green meadows and open spaces - and the privacy of a large estate. But down the road, nearer to the town center, lived a young woman and her boyfriend. One day, she met a man in his late twenties - Arthur's father, Richard - who immediately seemed taken with her. She couldn't have known it was a game, or a trick. But of course it was. And, as it turned out, the high she felt when he drank her blood was difficult for her to resist. She probably just had an addictive personality. Arthur never found out. But Katelyn's boyfriend Josh was not amused when he found out.

Richard didn't live through the end of the week.

As much as he was sorry for his father, Arthur was fascinated by what was next for his life. He would, obviously, take on the Yorke estate, the Yorke name, and their company. He had always been the ambitious sort - the kind that wanted what life had shown him was a virtual certainty, but even more beyond that. He wants to be exactly as he's meant to for the family, but he isn't sure it's enough for him.

That said, his mother did not handle Richard's passing very well. Marianne began to deeply fear that either she or her son would be left alone if something happened again, so she made a deal with Orpheus Grimm. He is a respected man, as far as she knows, and his daughter needed a future in his eyes. So she offered Arthur, thinking that if she were attacked, Arthur would have someone. And, if something happened to Arthur, she would have a daughter of sorts. It was rather selfish, but she convinced herself that it was about her son. And Arthur was so desperate to please his mother and pull her from her grief, he agreed. The respect he had felt for Richard was no longer particularly strong, but he does love Marianne.

It didn't help that the girl, Fiona, seemed particularly uninterested. He couldn't blame her. She is turning eighteen soon, and although they met about a year ago, it seems like they have made very little progress. He sort of wants them to, because he doesn't want a life of a loveless marriage. But he also doesn't know if he would believe it if she did care for him. He can't tell when she's faking it, can't tell if she feels much of anything. Perhaps if he learned to read her, and learned what she really wanted, it would be easier.

On a normal day, he goes to the office for a time, to check in and to try and keep people in line. He doesn't like that there could be a chance of his employees being unreliable. If they claim to see anything at all, he wants them to be honest. Even if that means they don't see something every now and again. He stops at St. Mungo's for blood, as he detests the idea of taking it from living people. But then he makes his way to the Ministry after lunch to help with what he can as far as curses go. And sometimes, when it is asked of him, he goes to see Fiona and her father. It feels almost pointless some days, but others they almost seem to try to understand each other. There are much less of those now than there used to be, when he first met her and was determined to see it through. He doesn't dislike her, but he thinks she dislikes him, and is starting to wonder if there isn't some way out of it for the pair of them.
