Potions with addictive side effects

on Fri Feb 12, 2016 6:37 am
Addiction is made up of tolerance, physical dependence and psychological dependence.

Tolerance refers to how much of a substance your body can tolerate having in its system.  A high tolerance means that you need more of the substance to obtain the same effect.  Organisms, including humans, build up a resistance over time, increasing their tolerance.

Physical dependence refers to how your body adapts to having the substance in your system.  Basically, it determines whether or not you get withdrawal symptoms.

Both tolerance and physical dependence refer solely to physiological states.  You can have either or both without being addicted.

Psychological dependence refers to the feeling of being unable to cope without the substance.  Addiction involves the psychological dependence on the symptoms brought about by the substance (or behavioural pattern, if we're being technical).  Addiction is a type of behaviour.
