ALISHA MERCHANT
______________________________________________________________________________________

------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION
------------------------------------------------------------

FULL NAME: Alisha Katherine Rizwan-MerchantNICKNAMES:  Ali, AshAGE: 15, 4th year (inability to attend school for a year)ALLEGIANCE: Life's too short to go around picking sides HOGWARTS HOUSE: Gryffindor, HufflepuffCLASSES: Charms, CoMC, DADA, Transfiguration and Potions. WAND: Alisha received her first wand at the age of seven, when she first displayed aptitude for magic, as accorded by the traditions of her father's family, sourced from a musty, dilapidated shop in the winding streets of Old Delhi. She lost it at the age of eleven, en-route to England; so she was bought another one, selected from the rickety shelves of Ollivander. Six months later, she found her old maple one concealed in the lining of the backpack that she had tugged to six countries so far- hence now is in the possession of two wands who do her bidding. For the last four years, she's been working on whether her ambidextrous talents extend only to writing with both hands, or perhaps simultaneous casting as well.Wand Number 1- Maple, cobra scale, 10 and three-quarter inches, bendy"I have often found that those chosen by maple wands are by nature travellers and explorers; they are not stay-at-home wands, and prefer ambition in their witch or wizard, otherwise their magic grows heavy and lacklustre. Fresh challenges and regular changes of scene cause this wand to literally shine, burnishing itself as it grows, with its partner, in ability and status. This is a beautiful and desirable wood, and wand quality maple has been among the most costly for centuries. Possession of a maple wand has long been a mark of status, because of its reputation as the wand of high achievers." ~ Garrick Ollivander Wand Number 2- Sycamore, phoenix feather, 11 inches, steady"The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become ‘bored,’ and many witches and wizards, settling down into middle age, are disconcerted to find their trusty wand bursting into flame in their hand as they ask it, one more time, to fetch their slippers. As may be deduced, the sycamore’s ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world's most highly-prized wand woods." ~ Garrick Ollivander.PLAY BY: Anushka Sharma

APPEARANCE
------------------------------------------------------------

HAIR COLOUR: Dark, mahogany brown; almost black hair. Wavy, reaches mid-backEYE COLOUR: Black. Dark brown under bright sunshine.COMPARATIVE HEIGHT: Tallish for her age; but she'll hardly grow any further, a maximum of two to three inches more.BODY BUILD: Slim, toned and very, very light on her feet. Rounded shoulders, smallish torso, long limbs. Seems to prance around an inch above the ground rather than walk. Correction, she hardly ever walks. Runs around.GENERAL APPEARANCE: Alisha's features have a clear Asian brush to them, due to her Indian ancestry: large, dark, long-lashed eyes, broad-ish face, thin nose, dimpled smile. She has long dark brown-to-black hair that swings around behind her back, usually held off her face by a hairband or a handy clip. She hardly ever ties it up, and when she does, its a clean, mess-free ponytail that's been known to whack many an irritating boy across the face on a good day. She has a love for capris and shorts that shall not be denied, and round-necked, sleeveless tees that are her standard uniform beneath her school robes- rain or shine. She also happens to adore a good ol' leather jacket, and herself owns four of them. But when given a choice, she doesn't like discriminating among clothes, and her cross-cultural style of being brought up in more a couple of countries, has resulted in her putting on almost anything and everything from around the globe- jeans, ponchos, cowboy hats, kurtis, kilts- and carrying it off bloody well.

Bright, flickering and dancing in the breeze, looking like it’s about to be put out any minute, but burning all the brighter for it. A candle flame in a dark room, in the way that if she’s present within any room, it’s difficult to pay attention to anything else. Passionate about whatever she does, Alisha practically runs on adrenaline- courageous and reckless to the extreme, sometimes walking on a terrace ledge blindfolded for a dare, riding the highest rollercoaster in the amusement park three times at a go, scampering up a sheer cliff during rock climbing without a harness. Its due to this precise reason that she’s ridiculously injury-prone, having broken her right arm twice, and both her legs one time each, spraining an ankle once a month. She hardly does things by measurement or moderation- if she loves it, she’ll dedicate hours and hours to it without rest and sleep; if she hates it, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men can’t get her to lift a finger. Apart from one or two stray incidents in her childhood, one which changed her life and she’s adjusted to ever since; Alisha’s been born under a lucky star, with adoring family that raised her to be an utterly spoilt brat, and sensible friends to knock her head to its proper size every once in a while. Although she’s been round the world and back (and apparently has relatives in every country, by her own accounts), Alisha has been closeted and more or less protected from the ugliness of the world. Of course, she’s also been bred on world literature and cinema, which is how she knows that ugliness and tragedy exists, but she’s never experienced it for herself. So she tends to be drawn towards repressed people, lonely people, the ones surrounded in intrigue- because she wants to understand how their life works, the kind which she can’t comprehend. In short words, she likes making people happy too. Also, that aforementioned incident which changed her life? At the age of eight, her cousin got her to swear an Unbreakable Vow (“just for fun”) that Alisha would never, ever tell lies. In successive incidents, when her heart stopped momentarily and she had to be rushed to hospital because she lied about the chocolate chip cookies; Alisha learned the importance of words. Tiny words, a little ‘nothing’, a little, white lie that can rob you of your life. This experience didn’t embitter her. It was just a minor handicap, after all. People out there had to live without their sight or hearing, surely she could live her entire life without telling lies? She was grateful for what she had, always. It was impossible to be happy otherwise- and Alisha wanted nothing else in the world than to be happy, always. So she learnt to moderate her words, and realized that only literal lies counted, and there were many ways of getting around the truth without actually, truly lying. It even made her smarter and sharper that way, more diplomatic than her usual blunt self. Of course, it was easier being blunt than to have to think your sentences through all the time- so if Alisha sees a cute boy, she goes right over, pecks him on the lips directly and affirms that he is such a treat to the eyes. Honesty really is the best policy. Especially if you have no other choice.

CHARACTER HISTORY
------------------------------------------------------------

Early Years: "Fred and George tried to get me to make one [Unbreakable Vow] when I was about five. I nearly did, too, I was holding hands with Fred and everything when Dad founds us. He went mental," said Ron, with a reminiscent gleam in his eyes. "Only time I've ever seen Dad as angry as Mum. Fred reckons his left buttock has never been the same since." Of course, Eddie Patil’s attempt was a lot more successful. It pretty much ruined her for life. What on earth was a child-slash-soon-to-be-teen to do without the ability to tell lies?Oh darn. Jumped too far in the story, didn’t we? Back to the beginning then.Alisha Merchant was born, a tiny little pink blob of a baby, wee-little thing, on a yacht halfway down the length of the Ganges. Quite literally born in motion. It was quite an indication of how her future years were about to go.She was home-schooled by her parents till six, however much you can be schooled till that age. Regardless of whether she knew her letters, she certainly knew how to jibber, dance and spit- all the talents that a girl would ever require. By the age of nine, skipping from one Muggle school to another from one continent to the next, her life seemed like one, fast train journey. Till then, she knew the Egyptian hieroglyphs, how to tame a stampeding bull, the waltz, the cross-stitch and all the spells in “Cursing Sparks for Dummies”. She could also recite all the kings and queens of England by name and years of reign. She was rather proud of herself.Of course, her parents loved her a little too much to allow her to simply cram up her brains with mismanaged facts (she didn’t know what ‘reign’ meant). So while she roamed six countries and her brain absorbed life and its ways like a dry sponge; she was sent back for her requisite three months of winter in India where her grandmother spooned gajar ka halwa into her mouth and drilled all the basic knowledge that a witch of Rizwan-Merchant ancestry should possess. But it wasn’t a fixed syllabus. So while Alisha would know everything there was to know about marine biology and quantum mechanics and Gamp’s Elemental Laws Of Transfiguration- she might not have any clue about gardening and flobberworms. It simply wasn’t covered. So here we have, an eleven year old, sprightly kid, equipped with a lot of worldly knowledge of politics and government structures and whatever else she might have heard of in her conversations with people high and low, being able to strike them up with anyone and everyone she met. Had a lot of friends of all ages as a result. Shame she had to go off to Hogwarts.Hogwarts Years: Her grandmother recommended further home-school, with an application for a degree and diploma in a required subject at seventeen. But Aunt Parvati insisted on Hogwarts, speaking of the school in glowing terms; and her mother had always been rather gullible anyway. So there she was, shut up in a castle. But there were kids in the castle. And books and rooms and ghosts like she hadn’t seen ever since that trip to the tombs, where she first rescued Dog. So, she flourished the best she could. But then, her parents scheduled a trip to Sydney during her fourth year. And she simply had to see the country where part of “Finding Nemo” had been set. So she convinced her parents with a few entreating glances and crocodile tears (only words counted as lies), and set off on a year’s trip. Got acquainted with the Opera House, the beaches and Australian beer. So she would have to repeat her fourth again, so what? Life, was waiting to be lived.Currently, Alisha Merchant at the age of fifteen is returned to Hogwarts to repeat her fourth year. She is, like most other people her age on a hormonal time-bomb- ready to set off any moment, snogging boys here and there. ‘Tis rather entertaining. No steady relationships though, ruins the fun of the entire thing. Not to say she would mind, much.Life, is good.Except, for one teeny-tiny fact. Why, in the name of all that was sacred in the world, was she a Hufflepuff? Whatever happened to being sorted into the House of the Brave? Like she’d aspired to all this while? It was alright. Alright. She’d be the coolest, smartest, sneakiest Hufflepuff ever known to wizardkind. She’d handle it.Oh, Merlin. Hufflepuff.Adulthood:
