Ash - Famous for its protective quality. It is especially suited for security even against the most powerful storm.

Birch- A perfect wand to gather information and hence making it a very good tool in legilimency. It bestows its wielder with wisdom and greatl helps in decision making.

Blackthorn - is a winter tree. Its white flowers are seen even before the leaves in the spring. It is black barked with vicious thorns and grows in dense thickets. Blackthorn wands are excellent for reverse spells, healing spells and repairing spells.

Elm - A slightly fibrous, tan-colored wood with a slight sheen. Elm wood is valued for it's resistance to splitting, adds stability and grounding to a spell.

Hawthorn- Hawthorn bings peace and tranquilty to its owner, it is a perfect wand for love spells and trance hexes. Works best when combined together with veela hair core, making it an extremely temperamental wand, but desired by many young witches and wizards.

Holly - A beautiful white wood with an almost invisible grain; looks very much like ivory. Holly is associated with the death and rebirth symbolism of winter in both Pagan and Christian lore and is important to the Winter Solstice. Holly is best used in defence spells particularly against the dark arts.

Magohany- An excellent wand for intelligent witches and wizards. Known to be an excellent wand for Transfiguration and a great tool to ward off dark magic.

Oak - has been considered sacred by just about every culture that has encountered the tree, but it was held in particular esteem because of its size, longevity, and nutritious acorns. The oak was the "King of Trees" in a grove. It can be used in spells for protection, strength, success and stability; the different varieties will lend their own special 'flavor' to the magic.

Willow - Willow bark has a light green colour although some can be black coloured. The willow has always been known as a tree of dreaming and enchantment, and it was associated in Celtic legend with poets and with spells of fascination and binding. Helps with divination as it generates great physics energy to the holder of the wand.

Yew - Also known as English Yew and European Yew. Another important tree to the Winter Solstice and the deities of death and rebirth. Yew wands are known to be one of the most powerful type and very compatible with Dark Arts spells

This is a most illuminating post Professor, well done. Its curious how Voldys wand (I think... not sure) is made out of Holly, when it is best to be used against the dark arts...

No you've got it the other way around. Harry's wand is Holly and Voldemort's wand is Yew. Ollivanders said something like "Yew, a powerful wand...terrible, terrible but great".

I actually thought Voldy's wand was willow... or was that ron? .... it might have been both.... i don't know...

No, im 99% positive that Voldy's wand is yew and Potter's is holly. Both share Fawkes' tail as a core.

the core's for sure. lol
now what about ron? isn't his willow or am i wrong about that too?

Thats a very good irony. Yeah I think Ron's second wand is Willow too, with unicorn's tail core.
